Ryan Reynolds Borrowed Hugh Jackman’s Broken Emmy to Accept Welcome to Wrexham Win: ‘Is It Supposed to Look Like That?’

Ryan Reynolds scored at Sunday’s Creative Arts Emmys and gave a predictably off-kilter acceptance speech with a nod to his “feud” – turned romance – with Hugh Jackman.

The actor, 47, recorded a thank you speech for Welcome to Wrexhamwon the extraordinary unstructured reality show in a sleek velor suit and Deadpool mask, clutching an Emmy as he thanked the team behind the FX series, on which he serves as an executive producer.

Despite the titular Welsh team’s promotion to the top flight, Reynolds’ statuette was looking a little worse for wear – and it turned out that it wasn’t Reynolds’ trophy at all, but the one Jackman won almost 20 years ago for his work hosting the 2004 Tony Awards.

Reynolds revealed on his Instagram Story after this weekend’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards that he “should have borrowed someone else’s” award – so “of course” he called Jackman, 55.

“Not surprisingly, he wasn’t sure if he had an Emmy. Turns out it does. He gives it to me, then asks: ‘Should it look like that?’ ”

Turns out it wasn’t. Jackman’s award was “heartbreaking,” Reynolds said, but not before adding, “I love this man.”

The co-owners learned from Wrexham FC chief executive Humphrey Ker in the second season premiere that they had already lost “loads” of money in their quest to rebuild and promote the club.

Ker declined to divulge the number, but Reynolds asked him to “quantify the burden on us,” to which team board advisor Shaun Harvey admitted they had lost an estimated $12 million on investment at the time of the shoot.

“I’m going to throw up,” Reynolds replied.

Ker’s advice to the owners was to keep pushing the team for promotion to the top flight, which came true in April when Wrexham were promoted to the English Football League.

It was an emotional win for the duo, with Reynolds writing about the experience on Instagram: “Everything I own smells like champagne, beer and weed. I’m still somewhere between giggling and sobbing. This city and this sport are some of the most romantic things on Earth.” country.”

Following their Emmy nominations last July, Reynolds and McElhenney thanked the people of Wrexham for allowing them to share their stories in a joint statement.
