Ryan Tham was born on Sunday, April 18, 1982 (39 years old; as of 2021) and his birthplace is Mumbai. His star sign is Aries. He attended GD Somani Memorial School and Human Resources College in Mumbai and completed his schooling. After that, he moved to Griffith University in Australia to pursue a degree in Business and Restaurant Management (2004). Ryan grew up in a family of top restaurateurs and wanted to run his own restaurant since he was a teenager. After Ryan returned from Australia, his grandfather’s Mandarin restaurant, which had been run for 45 years, closed (2003) and his father Henry was opening a fine dining restaurant bar at the original location. The restaurant opened in 2005 and was called “Henry Tham”. Ryan suggested to his father to add a bar to the “Henry Tham” restaurant, an idea that was imported from Australia.

His grandfather, Mon Yiu Tham, was a restaurateur who founded two of the oldest Chinese restaurants in Mumbai (Mandarin and Kamling). His maternal grandfather, Laxmichand Gupta, was a businessman. His maternal grandmother is named Reba Gupta.

Profession
Ryan started his career in 2004 while helping out at his father’s restaurant ‘Henry Tham’. In 2010, Ryan and his brother closed Henry Tham and opened the nightclub ‘Trilogy’ at Hotel Sea Princess in Juhu. The restaurant closed in 2017. In an interview, Ryan said about Trilogy:
“Most festivals have a pre-party and an after-party there. Nightclubs usually last two or three years. Our goal was to last three New Years; we did seven.”
Ryan and his brother Keenan started Pebble Street Hospitality with four friends from GD Somani Memorial School in 2014. The company’s first restaurant was The Good Wife, a modern European gastropub in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla complex.
Their next restaurant opening was “Koko” (which means “big brother” in Chinese), an Asian-themed gastropub in Kamala Mills (opened in 2016).
Pebble Street Hospitality also includes the Asian bistro ‘Foo’ in Lower Parel, Mumbai.

- He is the third generation of one of Mumbai’s oldest Chinese families. The Thames are one of the most prominent families in Mumbai’s Chinese food scene.
- Ryan’s grandfather was born into a barber family in Kolkata. He moved to Mumbai in the 1960s and settled there. In an interview, Ryan said about his grandfather:
I still remember those days. Grandpa would close the cash register and lock the money in the safe before he came home.”
- Ryan’s grandfather initially opened a salon in Mumbai with his wife but later decided to open a restaurant.
- Ryan and his brother Keenan launched ‘Nikkei’ – a fusion of Japanese and Peruvian cuisine – at Foo restaurant in Mumbai.
