Sachin Dev Burman or popularly known as SD Burman is a legendary singer and music director in Bollywood. Popularly known as “Burman Da”, he is considered one of the outstanding composers in the Indian music industry. He is known as the “Music Old Man” in the Indian music industry.

SD Burman (Sachin Dev Burman) was born on Monday, October 1, 1906, in Comilla, Tripura, British India (age 69 at the time of death). His zodiac sign is Libra. He was educated at Kumar Residential School in Agartala, Tripura and Yusuf School in Comilla. He received an art degree from Victoria College, Comilla.

He was born into the royal family of Tripura. His father is “Mahamanyabar Rajkumar Nabadwipchandra Dev Burman” and his mother “Nirmala Devi” is the royal princess of Manipur. He has six siblings – four brothers (all elders) and two sisters. When he was two years old, his mother died.

In 1930, he founded a music school “Sur Mandir” where “Meera Dasgupta” was one of his students. Boorman liked her simplicity and fell in love with her. On February 10, 1938, they were married. According to reports, there were some complications after their marriage. She came from a well-educated family, but not from a royal family. Therefore, Sachin’s family did not accept her as their daughter-in-law, which upset Sachin so much that he decided to cut off all ties with them.

On June 27, 1939, they gave birth to a baby boy “RD Burman (Rahul Dev Burman)”, a famous Bollywood veteran singer and music composer. He is the only son of Sachin Dev Burman. Later, Rahul got married to the legendary singer “Asha Bhosle”.

Profession
Sachin received his initial musical training from his father. From 1925 to 1930, he received professional singing training from KC Dey. Later, he trained under Bhishmadev Chattopadhyay, Khalifa Badal Khan (Sarangi Guru) and Sarodi Guru Ustad Allauddin Khan.

In the late 1920s he began working as a radio singer on “AIR Calcutta”. His first record was released with Khamaj in 1932 with “E Pathey Aaj Eso Priyo” on one side, the ballad “Dakle Kokil Roj Bihane” on the other side and a Hindustan record on the back.
In 1934, he sang thumri at the All India Music Conference and Bengal Music Conference in Calcutta, chaired by Rabindranath Tagore.
He composed music for Bengali dramas “Sati Tirtha” and “Janani”. His first film as music director was the Bengali film Rajgee (1937). In 1944, Sarsardar Mukherjee invited him to Bombay to score the films Shikari (1946) and Aath Din (1946). Burman became disillusioned with the materialism of the Indian music scene and therefore decided to return to Calcutta. Veteran actor Ashok Kumar (brother of Kishore Kumar) insisted that he stay on to compose music for the film Mashaal (1950). The film was a hit and he later collaborated with Dev Anand’s Nav Ketan Productions in Taxi Driver (1954), Nau do Gyarah (1957) and Kala Paani (1958).

He also made epic films like “Pyaasa” (1957), “Kaagaz Ke Phool” (1959) and “Devdas” (1955). He has appeared as a minstrel commentator in some films.
Some of his other popular films include “Guide” (1965), “Tere Mere Sapne” (1971), “Sharmeeelee” (1971), “Abhimaan” (1973), “Prem Nagar” (1974), “Sagina” (1974 ), “Chupke Chupke” (1975) and “Mili” (1975) ). SD Burman fell into coma after rehearsing the song “Badi Sooni Sooni” (sung by Kishore Kumar) for the film Mili. The song later became one of Kishore Kumar’s favorite songs.

Sachin had a dispute with singer “Sahir Ludhianvi”. The question is whether the lyrics are more creative or the music in the song is more creative. The argument became so intense that they never worked together again.

He was a strict music director who could not tolerate the star temper of legendary singer “Lata Mangeshkar”. So, he decided not to cooperate with her anymore. Later, at the request of “RD Burman”, they began to collaborate.

- Sachin’s fans used to call him by different names. People in Kolkata call him ‘Sachin Karta’, people in Mumbai call him ‘Burman Da’ and people in Bangladesh call him ‘Sochin Deb Burman’.
- After his father passed away, he often walked in the jungle to learn more about Bengali folk music from the local area.
- He is a sports enthusiast. He used to play cricket for the YMCA club. He also plays tennis and is a popular football player, playing as a center forward. He used to support East Bengal football team. Whenever his favorite team loses a game, he cries and stops eating. When he was hospitalized before his death and his son told him about his favorite team’s win, Sachin opened his eyes and nodded. This shows how much he loves sports.
- In 1958, he was awarded the “Sangeet Natak Akademi Award”, the only music director to receive this award.
- Apart from being a legendary music director, he also lent his voice to some iconic songs, including “Wahan Kaun Hai Tera…” from the film “Guide” (1965).
- Some of the famous singers trained by Sachin Dev include: RD Burman, Nasir Hussain and Anuradha Paudwal. He helped Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar and Hemant Kumar as well as actor Danny Denzongpa become a better singer.

- Sachin was very fond of Kishore Kumar and considered him as his second son. Kishore Kumar even visited SD Burman when he was hospitalized after suffering a stroke. Kishore comforted Mr. Berman and said:

- He is a “Paan lover” and his favorite Paan vendor is located at “The Jet” in Khar Station (his bungalow).
- According to reports, Sachin’s wife Meera was shifted to a nursing home called “Sharan” by her daughter-in-law “Asha Bhosle”. Meera decided that she would never leave “Sharan” even if she was unhappy there. She died in that nursing home on October 15, 2007.

- According to sources, in 2012, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced that the ancestral property of SD Burman would be converted into a folk cultural institution and museum.

- In 2018, a full body statue of veteran singer and music director ‘SD Burman’ was installed along with legendary singer ‘Kishore Kumar’. The statues were installed near the ‘RD Burman’ statue in Kolkata’s South End Park, where Sachin lived before coming to Mumbai. It was inaugurated by Kishore Kumar’s son “Amit Kumar”.
