Subrahmanyam Jaishankar is an Indian diplomat. He has served as India’s ambassador to the United States and China. Jaishankar currently serves as the Union External Affairs Minister. He is the only federal minister in Narendra Modi’s cabinet who has never contested any election.

He has two brothers: the famous historian Sanjay Subrahmanyam and India’s former rural development minister S. Vijay Kumar.
He is married to Kyoko Jaishankar. He has a daughter Medha Jaishankar and two sons Dhruva Jaishankar and Arjun Shankar. His eldest son Dhruv married Cassandra.

Subrahmanyam Jaishankar joined the Indian Ministry of External Affairs in 1977. His first international assignment was in Moscow, Russia. He served as third secretary and was promoted to second secretary in 1980. He returned to India in 1981 and served as Deputy Minister of the United States Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He played a key role in the team that resolved the dispute over the supply of nuclear fuel from the United States to India’s Tarapur nuclear power plant. In 1985, he was appointed First Secretary, Embassy of India in Washington, D.C.
In 1988, he was appointed First Secretary and Political Advisor to the Indian Peacekeeping Force in Sri Lanka. In 1993, he served as press secretary and speechwriter to former Indian President Shankar Dayal Sharma. In 2000, he was appointed Ambassador of India to the Czech Republic. In 2004, Jaishankar was appointed United States Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi. While serving as joint secretary of state, he was involved in negotiating the U.S.-India civilian nuclear deal and improving defense cooperation. In 2007, he was appointed High Commissioner of India to Singapore. As High Commissioner, he helped implement the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA); expanded the presence of Indian companies in Singapore.
In 2009, he was appointed Ambassador of India to China. He played a very important role in improving economic, trade and cultural relations between India and China. Over the years, Jaishankar has been involved in resolving many controversies and disputes between the two countries. In 2013, Jaishankar was considered by Manmohan Singh to be India’s external affairs minister, but was unable to be appointed due to internal pressure.
In September 2013, he was appointed Ambassador of India to the United States of America. He took office on December 23, 2013, at a time when tensions were high in the United States over the Devyani Khobragade incident. He successfully secured Devyani’s release. On March 10, 2014, he formally submitted his credentials to US President Obama in the Oval Office.
On January 29, 2015, Jaishankar was appointed as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of India by the Narendra Modi government. He has a good working relationship with former Union External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj. After Jaishankar retired, he joined Tata Sons as president of global corporate affairs. On May 30, 2019, he was appointed as the Union External Affairs Minister by Narendra Modi. On May 31, 2019, he was sworn in as cabinet minister.
In July 2019, he was elected as a member of the Federal Assembly of Gujarat. In July 2023, he submitted his nomination papers for the federal assembly elections in Gujarat for the second time.
