SK Wankhede was born and brought up in Nagpur, Maharashtra. He obtained part of his college education at a local university in Maharashtra and to further his education, SK Wankhede went to England to study law. After returning to India, he practiced law in Nagpur. In the 1940s, he joined politics and was imprisoned for participating in the Indian independence movement. SK Wankhede started serving in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly in 152. He served as the bilingual Deputy Speaker of Bombay State from November 23, 1956 to April 5, 1957. In 1957, SK Wankhede served for one year in the Kalmeshwar constituency of Bombay state. He served in the Maharashtra Assembly in 1962 and 1967. He was appointed Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from March 22, 1972 to April 20, 1977. He was subsequently appointed as the Mayor of Nagpur for a term of three years. In 1967, SK Wankhede attended the 22nd United Nations General Assembly in New York as a member of the Indian delegation. In 1972, he was appointed Vice-President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and served until 1980. He was subsequently promoted to BCCI President in 1980 and served until 1983. He also remained associated with the Bombay Cricket Association (BCA) from 1963 until his death.
