In 2018, Muniswami contested the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) mayoral election as a BJP candidate; he lost to Sampath Raju of the Indian National Congress Party (INC-JDS).

In 2019, the BJP announced him as its candidate from Kolar constituency in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. 30% of the population of Kolar belongs to Scheduled Castes and hence this seat is reserved for Scheduled Castes. Muniswami’s opponent is KH Muniyappa, a seven-time MP from Kolar constituency and former railway minister. Muniswami defeated Munyappa by a huge margin of over one hundred thousand votes and became a dark horse; thus, he became the first BBMP corporator to become a member of the Lok Sabha.

On September 13, 2019, he became a member of the Standing Committee on Coal, Mines and Steel, and in 2023, a member of the Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Heavy Industry and Public Enterprises.

Slamming a woman on Women’s Day

On March 8, 2023, S. Muniswamy was criticized for his regressive remarks. He said he lashed out at the owner of a clothing stall while inspecting stalls at an exhibition at a Women’s Day event.

Who gave you permission to set up this stall? Where is your bindi? Your husband is still alive, isn’t he? No common sense! ”

The incident drew strong criticism from opposition lawmakers. Later, the BJP issued a statement saying that this was Muniswami’s personal view and the party had nothing to do with such views.
