Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan’s Cover of Wham!’s ‘Last Christmas’ Is the Christmas Duet We Needed

Sabrina Carpenter’s new Netflix holiday special features an oh-so-perfect guest cameo: fellow pop star Chappell Roan.

Christmas Without Meaning with Sabrina Carpenterwho released on the streaming platform on Friday, December 6, features classic Christmas jingles alongside the singer’s current hits. And at one point in the special, Roan, 26, joins Carpenter, 25, for a performance of Wham! holiday classic “Last Christmas”.

The pair – sporting green velvet dresses and white fur – sing the 1984 song as they move around a set designed to look like the end of a raucous house party.

While speaking with Yahoo! Entertainment, the show’s set designer, Jason Sherwood revealed that the “Espressa” and “HOT TO GO” singers completely guided the creative direction of their duet.

“We were like, ‘What’s the moment? Are those on the grand staircase? Is it this big performative thing?’ “, he recalled. “They both came back to the team saying, ‘We want to do something that feels a little more informal [and] kind of cold.’ ”

“The idea came that it was the end of the party,” Sherwood continued, noting that the “junk” was originally “pristine and beautiful” living room decor to make it look like the end of a wild night.

“That’s part of it Euphoria, it’s part of an ’80s movie — like the end of an ’80s prom,” he added. “Then they sing, play and dance together — and it’s such a beautiful moment. It’s probably my favorite moment in the show because it speaks [to] the essence of what we wanted to do.”

Roan has previously spoken about her friendship with Carpenter, noting that the two have bonded over their meteoric rise to fame in such a relatively short period of time.

“We’re both going through something so freaking hard,” Roan said Rolling Stone in September. “[Carpenter] it just feels like everything is flying and she’s barely holding on.”

“It was good to know that someone else felt that way,” added the “Good luck, honey!” singer.
