Sabrina Carpenter Says She Wrote 'Espresso' as a 'Manifestation Tactic' When 'No One' Liked Her 'Romantically'

Sabrina Carpenter’s big hit “Espresso” was a “manifestation tactic.”

On Friday, August 23, Carpenter, 25, opened up about her intention behind the single – which has earned one billion Spotify streams, become her first top five hit on Billboard Hot 100 and topped the charts in the UK, Ireland and Australia — and his success in an interview with The Guardian.

“It was a manifestation tactic, because nobody he liked me romantically at that point – no one was obsessed with me,” she told the paper. “I had no one to talk to at all.”

The performer of “Pera” added that she was “always a bit delusional, in that sense.”

Carpenter also addressed her “newfound” chart success, thanks to “Espresso” and “Please Please Please.”

“Full transparency: I’ve never been on the charts until recently, so it’s a new discovery, like… I am interested“, she said. “That’s not why I write music and it’s not why I’ll ever write music.”

Instead, Carpenter called the recognition “sprinkles on top of the ice cream.”

In June, the singer of the song “Suži me” discussed the success of “Espresso” in an interview with Rolling Stone. “My mom said, ‘Do you feel crazy right now?’” Carpenter said of the song. “I just love that people get my sense of humor.”

She told the publication that the song was inspired by a trip to a creperie while in France. Her time there has turned into an unapologetically catchy chorus. “I decided to put that burden on other people,” Carpenter teased.

The “Nonsense” singer also said that songwriters Steph Jones and Amy Allen, as well as producer Julian Bunetta, inspired the song’s quotable lyrics.

“It’s the only way those borderline idiotic-slash-funny lyrics can happen,” Carpenter said of working with her songwriting team. “I’ve really honed in on the people I love making music with.”

In June, the success of “Espresso” also led to a collaboration between the rising pop star and Van Leeuwen for – appropriately – espresso-flavored ice cream.

“Available from JUNE 28!!!!!” Carpenter wrote over a photo of her hands holding a closed blue box of ice cream and the single’s sleeve.

“It’s so cute,” she captioned another picture, as a nod to her hit.
