“Sabrina the Teenage Witch” was a primarily ’90s comedy series that ran for seven seasons and aired 163 episodes. In addition to the witch of the same name (Melissa Joan Hart) – who often has trouble using her powers – the series features a number of memorable characters, such as the cat Salem (Nick Bakay) and Sabrina’s aunt, Zelda (Beth Broderick) and Hilda (Caroline Rhea).
Caroline Rhea has an interesting story about how she became part of the “Sabrina” family. During the 2017 reunion of the series hosted by People, Rhea was one of the actors talking about her time on the sitcom. She told People that she had a terrible boyfriend while “Sabrina” was in the works.
Rhea said: “I just got back from a horrible trip to Hawaii with my boyfriend, and the trip was so bad that we broke up before the pictures were taken. Creator Nell Scovell called her and told her about Hilda, her witch, and the fact that she had a man locked in a ring because he didn’t love her. Rhea applied immediately.
Caroline Rhea thinks Hilda’s past is truly amazing. “Because I really think it’s like a documentary. Like it’s going to be a skill that I’ll learn in no time.” Being able to relate to Hilda in such a personal way makes it easier for Rhea to bring her to life. It must have been interesting to play a woman trapped by her ex, since she is also reeling from a bad relationship.
Throughout the series Hilda has had no luck in love. At first, she, like Rhea, was broken up. Although she and Drell (Penn Jillette) try again, she fails the true love test and ends the relationship on good terms. Hilda also has a back-and-forth romance with Sabrina’s principal, Willard Kraft (Martin Mull). Though to no avail in their courtship, Hilda became jealous when he began dating her younger sister, Zelda. Finally, Hilda is able to find true love with Will (Douglas Sills), a witch she met in the Second Realm. The two get married in the Season 6 episode, “I Fall to Pieces,”
Although Rhea started playing Hilda because of their similar circumstances, she was able to see her character grow, love, and become more than just a way to move on after a pretty terrible breakup. terrible.
