Sachin Vaze is an Indian police officer who is serving as the head of the Crime Intelligence Department in the Mumbai Police. He was an encounter specialist in the Mumbai Police.

In 1990, Sachin was posted as a sub-inspector in the Mumbai State Police. He was posted to the Naxalite-affected district of Gadchiroli. Two years later, in 1992, Sachin Vaze was posted to the Thane City Police. In Thane, Sachin solved several cases involving Indian crime lord Dawood Ibrahim and other big gangsters. Soon, Sachin was promoted to head the Special Cell of the Thane Crime Branch; Sachin made a name for himself among his peers for solving cases using high-tech equipment. During this time, he became an encounter expert with a record of 63 encounters. Later, Sachin became a part of the Crime Intelligence Unit (CIU) of the Mumbai Police. In 1997, the Mumbai Police formed a special cell to tackle the growing problem of extortion and open violence. Sachin was transferred to the Anti-Extortion Team (AE Team) along with Pradeep Sharma (his colleague and encounter expert), and the six-year-old unit saw their first encounter in a case. In March 2004, Sachin Vaze and three policemen were suspended for the murder of Khwaja Yunus in police custody. Khwaja Yunus was the main suspect in the Ghatkopar bomb blast case in December 2002. Sachin resumed his duties on June 6, 2020, due to staff shortage in Mumbai during the COVID-19 pandemic.

- On March 3, 2004, Sachin Waze was suspended for the murder of Khwaja Yunus, a suspect in the December 2002 Ghatkopar bomb blast case. Khwaja Yunus was in police custody at the time of the murder, making Sachin Waze and other officials prime suspects in the murder.
- Government doctor and right to information activist Anil Yadav was arrested in 2017. Anil was accused of threatening builders for money. During the investigation, Yadav said that Sachin Vaze was also involved with him and helped him to extort money from builders.
- On February 25, 2021, a Scorpio car was found outside Mukesh Ambani’s house with loose gelatin sticks and a threatening note. Further investigation revealed that the car belonged to Mansukh Hiren, a resident of Thane, who had reported that someone had stolen his car a few days ago. Sachin Vaze led the investigation team in the case. Hiren was found dead on March 5, 2021, and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis demanded the arrest of Sachin Vaze. Mansukh Hiren’s wife Vimla Hiren also accused Sachin of involvement in the murder. On March 12, 2021, Sachin Vaze was transferred from the Crime Intelligence Unit (CIU) of the Mumbai Crime Investigation Bureau and was shifted to the Citizen Facilitation Centre (CFC) of the Mumbai Police. Later, on March 15, 2021, Sachin was suspended from his post as Assistant Inspector of Police and was subsequently arrested by the NIA (National Investigation Agency). The Deputy Commissioner of Police said:
API Sachin Vaze has been suspended by the Additional Commissioner of Special Police. ”
- On May 11, 2021, the Mumbai Police permanently fired Vaze for allegedly placing a car filled with explosives outside Mukesh Ambani’s Mumbai residence. His dismissal order reads:
API Sachin Hindurao Waze has been relieved of his duties as a police officer. The Mumbai Police Commissioner issued this order today under Article 311(2)(B) of the Constitution of India.”
Facts/Trivia
- After being suspended in 2004, Sachin Vaze applied for reinstatement several times, but the Maharashtra government rejected his request every time. Later, in November 2007, Sachin decided to resign and submitted his resignation letter. However, his resignation letter was also not accepted by the Maharashtra government and he was suspended for 16 years.
- Sachin published a book in Marathi titled Jinkun Harleli Ladhai in 2012. The book was based on the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.
- During Sachin’s suspension, he joined the Shiv Sena and started working for the party.
