A Grade One hurdles winner a few years ago, Fry’s mount smoothly transitioned to the Flat to win the November Handicap last season at Doncaster under Osborne, who was once again riding.
Results in both codes have since been inconsistent, but Metier, who recently showed signs of form by finishing second in the Queen’s Cup at Musselburgh, was one of the market leaders for Chester’s £150,000 showpiece at 5-1 and delivered in a thrilling finish.

The seven-year-old was in the back of the pack for the majority of the two and a half miles, but before the home turn, he started to close the gap on the leaders and surged up the straight.
Although Zoffee had defeated the 11-4 favourite Call My Bluff to take the lead, she was unable to hold off Metier’s late charge, and the latter crossed the finish line first by a neck.
It didn’t really go through the race, I was too far behind, and he was all guts, according to Osborne.
“I was mentioning what a tough horse he is, but I’m also really impressed with his skill, and at this trip on the Flat, he’s still relatively undiscovered. You’d like to believe that the tank is still full.
He simply has a lot of talent, and despite being a huge horse, he is really well balanced to navigate this type of track.
“I was having to make up ground on a part of the track that I really didn’t want to have to, but he was making it feel very easy and I didn’t want to check his momentum.”
We’ve had some good runs and near misses in big races, but this matters so much because it puts our head above the parapet, said Fry, who was making his first-ever trip to Chester.
“We were aware that stall 14 wasn’t the best choice, but Saffie managed to sit as far forward as she could. He’s had an absolutely fantastic ride thanks to her.
He was 12th when I watched him pass this on the last circuit, but all he’s done in the straight is keep rolling and rolling.
“He’s shown all of his finest form on slower ground, but ultimately, it comes down to picking the right horses at the right time. I’m visiting Chester for the first time, and as I walked around the course, I thought, “What an amazing place.”
