Sage the Miniature Poodle Wins Best in Show at the 2024 Westminster Dog Show

The Westminster Dog Show has crowned its next best dog,

Miniature poodle Sage won Best in Show on May 14 at the 148th Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show presented by Purina Pro Plan. The famous dog competition — the second-longest continuously running sporting event in the US — was held for the second year in a row at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York, home of the US Open Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Sage, a female miniature poodle — show name GCHG CH Surrey Sage — triumphed over 2,500 other dogs from more than 200 breeds at the Confirmation Show in Westminster. To win Best in Show, Sage first had to win Best of Breed for her breed and Best in Group for the non-sporting group.

The miniature poodle from Houston, Texas was joined by six other Best in Group winners from the 2024 Westminster Dog Show in the Best in Show circuit. Other puppies that competed in the Best in Show round were Louis the Afghan Hound from the Hound Group, Mercedes the German Shepherd from the Herding Group, Comet the Shih Tzu from the Toy Group, Micha the Black Cocker Spaniel from the Sporting Group, Monty the Large Schnauzer from the Working Group and Frankie , a colored bull terrier from the Terrier group.

Professional dog handler Rosalind Kramer judged the final round of the 2024 Westminster Dog Show. She named Mercedes German Shepherd Reserve Best in Show, the Westminster title of runner-up.

Sage didn’t win alone; The dog’s handler, Kaz Hosaka, was with the dog throughout the competition and helped guide the miniature poodle to victory. Hosaka said at the end of the Best in Show round that he was retiring from dog showing after participating in 45 Westminster dog shows. Sage succeeds Buddy Holly, a Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen, who won Best in Show at the 2023 Westminster Dog Show.

Other winners of the 2024 Westminster Dog Show include Nimble. All-American Dog Nimble — All-American is Westminster’s term for mixed-breed dogs — won the Masters Championship in agility.

The black and white puppy is the first mixed breed dog to win an agility competition at the Westminster Dog Show. Nimble was also the first dog in the 12 inch class to win first place at the Masters Agility Championship.

Nimble, a 6-year-old female, bested 351 agility competitors to win. Nimble, which goes by the name of the NAC MACH show Breezy Blue’s Be Quick! T2B MXF, won the championship with a time of 28.76 seconds.
