Get ready for the best news you’ve heard all day, Sally Rooney fans. New material arrives from the Irish bestselling author. Rooney’s American publisher, Farrar, Straus and Giroux, announced that her new novel, Intermezzo, will publish this fall. “Through the components of everyday life, Sally Rooney builds a world of ethical complexity that matches that of the great novels of the nineteenth century,” Mitzi Angel, publisher and president of Farrar, Straus and Giroux, said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE.Intermezzo follows the lives of two brothers who lead life after their father’s death. Peter, a seemingly steadfast lawyer in his thirties, then finds himself self-medicating as he tries to balance his relationships with two different women.

Ivan, Peter’s 22-year-old brother, describes himself as a “loner” and competitive chess player. He falls in love with an older woman, whose life quickly intertwines with his. Both siblings, as well as their lovers, enter a life phase marked by sadness and hope.
Hulu captures conversations with friends based on novels written by normal people
“Intermezzo is a stunning novel: It marks another advance in the work of a writer who captures our life and our times with more stylistic verve and generosity of spirit than ever,” says Angel. Faber, Rooney’s UK publisher, also teased opening lines of the novel on X, formerly known as Twitter.
