News about Sam Donaldson
A seasoned network news reporter claims that a significant portion of Americans no longer understand the facts or care about the truth as a result of the Internet.
Veteran ABC News reporter Sam Donaldson reflected on his 52 years in the media industry during a conference Tuesday night at the University of Montana’s Mansfield Center. He also spoke about changes in the media landscape that are not good for a living democracy.
Donaldson, 88, recalled Montana Sen. Mike Manfield, saying he last spoke to Mansfield in the mid-1990s. After he was re-elected, President John Kennedy reportedly told Mansfield that he had the intention to withdraw US troops from Vietnam, according to Donaldson. If so, he asked Mansfield. Unsurprisingly from a man known for his shortness, Mansfield simply said, “Yes, he is.”
Fortunately, Donaldson was not so secretive, supporting some of his thoughts on current affairs with numerous anecdotes from his time covering Congress and the Vietnam War.
When he began his journalistic career, television broadcasts were still in black and white. After she broke up, social media and the internet began to show the danger potential of her. Donaldson argued that the biggest change in all this was the proportion of Americans who did not know the facts but were willing to accept certain points of view.
There is a segment of our population that believes the lies, and if you try to expose the lies, they get pretty furious, according to Donaldson. Most of the people I see on cable TV and on individual websites don’t care about the truth. If the problem cannot be solved, I think it is very dangerous for the nation and worrying.
Donaldson was puzzled as to how Americans could come together to accept common truths, as they had done more often before the invention of the Internet. The only advice from him was to get people to read or listen to news from multiple sources.
You need a variety of sources, according to Donaldson. “While many people now have the opportunity to get that information online, they don’t. Since the changes are unknown to them. So how will you tell fact from fiction?
