Biography of Sam Lafferty

Sam Lafferty was born to parents Jill and Andy in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania on March 6, 1995. His mother remarried Dave Weaver, who coached Lafferty as a child when his parents later divorced. After Mario Lemieux returned to the Pittsburgh Penguins for the 2000–01 NHL season, he was motivated to start playing hockey. Lafferty and his younger brother Charlie participated in the Pittsburgh Area Hockey League for the Mid-State Mustangs and the Altoona Trackers after attending a skate run by Dave.

From 2014 to 2018, Lafferty competed in college hockey at Brown. On January 3, 2015, he scored his first collegiate goal against Denver. Lafferty earned third-team All-ECAC and second-team All-Ivy League honors in 2016–17 and 2017–18, respectively. On February 23, 2018, he defeated Harvard to record his first hat trick as a college player.

  • Before applying to prep schools, Lafferty attended Hollidaysburg Area High School for most of his freshman and sophomore years. Before a place at Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts came up, he had already committed to attend Shady Side Academy. Lafferty was selected to the 2014 Prep School All-New England team after recording career highs of 21 goals and 34 assists for 55 points in 25 games during the 2013-14 season. Lafferty earned 57 assists and 38 goals during his three seasons at Deerfield Academy, totaling 95 points in 74 games. Lafferty was selected by the Penguins in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft after graduating in 2014.
  • Lafferty played four seasons of college hockey with the Brown Bears men’s hockey team from 2014 to 2018 despite being drafted. Lafferty appeared in all 31 games during his rookie season, finishing fourth on the club with eight assists and sixth with four goals. Lafferty participated in Division I golf while playing hockey as a freshman, earning a berth in the Ivy League Men’s Golf Championship in 2015. Lafferty’s offensive production dipped the following year, as he finished the campaign with four goals and six assists for 10 points.
