Samrat Choudhary entered politics actively in 1990 and was sworn in as the Agriculture Minister of the Government of Bihar on May 19, 1999 under the Rabri Devi government. As agriculture minister, he ran the surveying and horticulture department, but he was quickly removed from his post after the opposition claimed he was underage. On June 2, 2014, he was appointed as the Minister of Urban Development and Housing in the Government of Jidan Ram Manjhi. In 2021, Samrat was appointed as Panchayati Raj Minister in Nitish Kumar’s expanded cabinet on the basis of BJP quota.

In 2020, he was one of the leading contenders of the National Democratic Alliance during the Bihar Assembly elections. On August 24, 2022, he served as Leader of Opposition in Bihar Legislative Council before Rabri Devi. In March 2023, Chaudhry succeeded Sanjay Jaiswal as the president of the Bihar party of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Political analysts said the party leadership took this action to create a strong base among Kushwaha voters.

Forging age accusations
In November 1999, Samrat Choudhary was sacked by Governor Suraj Bhan on the grounds that he was a minor; he invoked Article 164 of the Constitution and hinted at becoming a minister, a A person should reach the qualifying age to become a member of the State Legislative Assembly (25 years) or Legislative Council (30 years). Further, Governor Suraj Bhan directed the state government to file a case of fraud, forgery and misrepresentation against Choudhary and initiate repayment of all salary and benefits provided to him since his appointment as minister. The dispute initially arose out of a petition submitted by Samatha Party leaders Raghunath Jha and PK Sinha to state Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) AK Basu and then Governor Justice BM Lal, claiming that Chaudhry was not old enough to be a minister , because he is under 25 years old. Lal directed Basu to investigate the situation and provide a report within 25 days. Lal later retired but the matter came up again when Suraj Bhan directed the CEO to submit the entire report by November 5, 1999. In his report to the governor, Basu noted Choudhary’s failure to cooperate with investigators, saying:
The minister failed to prove that he was of age to be a qualified minister. ”

controversial statement
In August 2023, Samrat Choudhary hit the headlines after he made a controversial statement on the show Tulsi Ke Ram. He stated that he would not accept 1947 as the year of India’s independence and believed that India gained true independence only after the 1977 general revolutionary movement led by Jayaprakash Narayan. It was a political movement started by students in Bihar against the tyranny and corruption of the state government and later turned against Indira Gandhi’s central government. This later led to several ministers questioning Samrat Chaudhry’s knowledge.
