Sandeep Patil was born on Wednesday, 8 August 1956, in Mumbai (now Mumbai) (age 65 years 2021). His zodiac sign is Leo. He completed his education at Balmohan Vidyamandir, Mumbai and later got admitted to Ramnarain Ruia College, Mumbai. He started playing cricket at a very young age and his father was a first-class cricketer. He made his debut for India in 1980 and grabbed the attention of cricket fans with his strong stroke play in the middle and helped the team out of trouble. He also performed well in domestic cricket, which earned him a spot in the 1983 World Cup. He failed to cross 50 in any game, but in the semi-finals he scored 51 and led the team to a historic victory over England. In the final, he scored 26 points to help India win the Cricket World Cup for the first time. Since then, his form has declined and he has been removed from the team. After some great performances in the Ranji Trophy, he returned to the team again at the end of 1984, scoring 609 runs in that tournament. However, after playing a Test match against England, he scored 41 runs and was dropped again. He retired from international cricket in 1986 but continued to play on the domestic circuit. In the initial days of his career, he was more of a faulty medium-pace bowler than a batsman. He started his cricket career with Mumbai University’s Rohinton Baria Trophy. He played his first Ranji match for Mumbai in the 1975-76 season.

When he started his career, he was an irregular member of the team. In 1979, he became a permanent member of the team after scoring 145 runs in the Ranji Trophy semi-finals. In this match, Mumbai lost their first four wickets for 72 runs when Sandeep batted at number six. His innings helped Mumbai advance to the final. After playing for Edmonton in the Middlesex League in 1979 and 1980, he played for Somerset B the following year. In the 1979-80 season, India played Australia and Pakistan at home and Sandeep was selected for the tour matches against both teams. He scored 44 points and 23 points on behalf of the Western Conference team against Australia. This was followed by scores of 68 and 71 against Pakistan. These innings earned him a spot in the Indian national team for the last two Test matches against Pakistan. Two weeks before this match, he had achieved his highest first-class performance against Saurashtra at the Wankhede Stadium. When he came to bat the next day, he was unbeaten on 45 before lunch. He scored 210 runs in 205 balls, including 7 sixes and 19 fours. The final six he hit cleared the stadium and landed on the hockey rink behind the stadium.

But in the second innings, he continued to bat on captain Sunil Gavaskar’s insistence and India lost by an innings. Two weeks later, he scored 174, his highest Test score in the second Test against Australia at Adelaide in January 1981. This score came when India lost their first four wickets by 130 runs. It was the highest score by an Indian in Australia at that time and included twenty-two fours and a six at mid-wicket by Bruce Yardley. Interestingly, in March 1981, he opened the bowling match for Australia against New Zealand along with Kapil Dev. He was later left out for the 1981-82 home series against England but was quickly picked up again. In the final series, he scored his second Test hundred. India were on the brink of an innings defeat when Sandeep and Kapil Dev scored 96 together. In the next game, after taking the new ball, he hit Ian Botham for four and three off the last two balls of the first over. In the next over, he hit Bob Willis for six and took his score from 73 to 104 in nine balls. He continued with a score of 129 until the match was interrupted by rain.
