Profession
Sanjay’s strong batting skills in district-level cricket tournaments helped him to sign a contract with VB Thiruvallur Veerans to participate in the 2017 Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL).
He was subsequently selected in Tamil Nadu’s T20 squad for the 2017 Inter-State T20 Championship and played his first T20 match for Tamil Nadu against Kerala in Chennai on 3 February 2017. Due to his all-round performances in the 2017 TNPL and Inter-State T20 Championship, he signed his first IPL contract with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for Rs 10 lakh prior to IPL 2017. Despite this, he did not play a single match throughout the season.
Tamil Nadu’s T20 team was strong with many spin bowling all-rounders in the lineup, so Sanjay rarely got a chance to play. Seeing this, Sanjay decided to start playing for Meghalaya’s cricket team. On 9 December 2019, Sanjay made his Ranji Trophy debut for Meghalaya against Nagaland and performed well, taking 9 wickets and scoring 61 runs. His bowling figures of 9 wickets and 52 runs are the third best in the history of Indian first-class cricket.
Sanjay ended his first Ranji Trophy season by taking 55 wickets and scoring 603 runs. This is the second best all-around performance figure by a cricketer in the history of the Ranji Trophy. He has since represented Meghalaya in several tournaments, showcasing his talent with both the bat and the ball. Sanjay’s performances in domestic cricket caught the attention of Sunrisers Hyderabad, who later bought him for Rs 20 lakh at the 2020 IPL player auction.
