Sanjeev Jeeva was a Hindu gangster who was killed in broad daylight on Wednesday, June 6, 2023, at Kaiserbagh Court in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. He is suspected in the murder of senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Brahm Dutt Dwivedi. He is a close aide of Indian gangster and politician Mukhtar Ansari.

Sanjeev Maheshwari, also known as Sanjeev Jeeva, was born in 1975 in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh (age 48 at the time of death). Before entering the world of crime, he worked as a compounder in a dispensary in Muzaffarnagar.

Kidnapping, ransom, robbery and fraud: the rise of Sanjeev Jeeva
Sanjeev Maheshwari, alias “Jeeva,” worked as a compounder in a pharmacy in the 1990s. At that time, he kidnapped the pharmacy owner and demanded a huge ransom. After this incident, he went on to engage in various other criminal activities which resulted in Sanjeev Jeeva’s name becoming famous in the gangster world. Later, he was involved in kidnapping the son of a Kolkata businessman and demanding a ransom of Rs 2 crore. He also became a member of several gangs such as Nazim Gang of Haridwar, Satendra Barnala Gang and others. He and his criminal gang engaged in murder, robbery, extortion, kidnapping, robbery and fraud. More than 24 police cases have been registered against Sanjeev Jeeva in Uttar Pradesh police stations in Muzaffarnagar, Shamli, Ghazipur, Farrukhabad and Hardwar districts. The police registered more than 22 cases against Sanjeev Jeeva under the Gangster Act 1986. Not only this, his properties worth over Rs 4 crore were also confiscated under various provisions of the Act.

Brahm Dutt Dwivedi was a BJP MP from Farrukhabad who was murdered on February 10, 1997. His son, Sunil Dutt, said in a 2017 interview that his father was assassinated while sitting in his car after attending a tilak ceremony in India. Kotwali city area of Farrukhabad district. The attack resulted in the death of his security guard BK Tiwari and injuries to his driver Rinku. On July 17, 2003, the CBI Court in Lucknow sentenced Sanjeev Jeeva and former Samajwadi Party MLA Vijay Singh to life imprisonment for their involvement in the case. Both appealed the High Court decision. In 2017, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court upheld the judgment of the trial court. As a result of the murder, Jiwa developed close ties with another famous gangster, Munna Bajrangi. Later, in 2005, both Bajrangi and Jeeva were accused by the police of being involved in the killing of six people, including Krishnanand Rai, a BJP MP from Ghazipur.

According to multiple reports, Sanjeev Jeeva is a close aide of Mukhtar Ansari. On November 29, 2005, BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai was killed in a mafia-style murder. Rai’s murder was allegedly due to Afzal Ansari’s defeat in the 2002 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, when Rai emerged as the winner. The names said to be involved in the murder of Krishnanand Rai are Mukhtar Ansari, Afzal Ansari, Munna Bajrangi and Sa Jiv Jiva. However, all the accused were acquitted by a Delhi court in 2019.

Maheshwari, along with co-accused Mukhtar Ansari and his brother Afzal Ansari, were convicted in 2019 of murdering BJP MP Krishnanand ·BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai and six others were acquitted by a Delhi court. The result was a lack of cooperation as witnesses became hostile during the proceedings. Mohammadabad MLA Krishnanand Rai defeated Afzal Ansari in the 2002 assembly elections. Rai and six others were murdered on November 29, 2005, when a group of men armed with automatic and semi-automatic weapons blocked their vehicle and opened fire on them.

Jeeva is also charged in the 2017 murder of businessman Amit Dixit, also known as Goldie. After a thorough investigation, the court sentenced him and three others to life imprisonment. Therefore, Jiwa was lodged in Lucknow jail. However, there are allegations that he continued his gang’s activities even in prison. His gang reportedly consisted of more than 35 members.

While Sanjeev Jeeva and Munna Bajrangi were behind bars, they continued to eye various properties in western Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Their over-involvement and interest in these properties did not sit well with gangster Sushil Mooch, resulting in a rivalry between the two gangs. Clashes between the two sides further escalated over a valuable property near Haridwar traffic stand, resulting in several deaths.

In 2021, Sanjeev Jeeva’s wife Payal Maheshwari wrote to the then Chief Justice of India requesting protection for her husband Sanjeev Jeeva, fearing that Jeeva’s life was in danger. Jiv Maheshwari alias Jiva. However, her fears came true on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, when Sanjeev Jeeva was reportedly shot dead by unidentified assailants inside the Lucknow SC/ST Court. During the attack, two policemen; Kamlesh and a 6-year-old girl Lal Mohammad and an 18-month-old baby were also injured. The police have successfully arrested one of the attackers, identified as Vijay Yadav, and are currently questioning him as part of the investigation.
According to reports, Jiwa was summoned to a Lucknow court for hearing of the case when unknown assailants dressed as lawyers opened fire on Jiwa.

- In 2022, Sanjeev Jeeva was caught by the Uttar Pradesh police in possession of an AK-47 rifle and approximately 1,300 rounds of ammunition.
- Sanjeev Jeeva was shocked by the killing of Munna Bajrangi in 2018 in Baghpat jail complex in Uttar Pradesh. He desires power and becomes a godfather. Even if he is imprisoned, he poses a threat to many people. He reportedly ran gang activities in prison.
- The government recently confiscated around 8 bighas (approximately 5 acres) of land belonging to Sanjeev Jeeva and his wife Payal Maheshwari. The land is located at Thana Adarsh Mandi and Sadar Kotwali and is divided into two parts. According to reports, the estimated value of the land is around Rs. 186 Crores. According to Amarujala, the wheat crop grown on the farm was auctioned for rupees. 9,000, and the proceeds were deposited into a government account. Sanjeev Jeeva, his wife and children are listed as owners of 21 bigha land in Adampur village. He purchased the property in the name of his wife and son.
- In the 2017 Assembly elections, Sanjeev Jeeva’s wife Payal was the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) candidate. Unfortunately, she suffered an electoral defeat.
- Sanjeev Jiwa was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Bram Dutt Devidi, but he was acquitted in several other cases.
