Sanket Mahadev Sargar is an Indian weightlifter who holds the national and Commonwealth record for lifting 256 kg in the men’s 55 kg category. At the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, he won a silver medal with a total lift of 248kg.

Sanket Mahadev Sargar was born on Monday, October 16, 2000 (22 years old; as of 2022) from Sangli, Maharashtra. His zodiac sign is Libra. Speaking in an interview about the beginning of his passion for weightlifting, he said:
Our local kids hardly play any other sports. I started lifting weights when I was 13 years old. “
In 2012, his father enrolled him in the Digvijay Weightlifting Centre, run by weightlifting coach Nana Sinhasane, located near their tea stall. In an interview, Sanket described his busy schedule, saying:
I started weight training while also helping him at the tea stall. My day starts at 6am in the store where I prepare my items for the day before going to training. After school, I also manage the Hpa-an joint store. “
He studied at Shivaji University, Kolhapur, Maharashtra. From 2017 to 2021, Nana Sinhasane’s son Mayur Sinhasane began training Sanket. Before joining the national weightlifting camp in Patiala, Sagar helped his parents run the family-owned tea stall in Sangli. In Patiala, he started training under Vijay Sharma and Olympic silver medalist Mirabhai Chanu.

Sanket Mahadev Sagar’s father’s name was Mahadev Sagar. His parents ran a tea stall-cum-pan shop together in Sangli, Maharashtra. In an interview, Sanket’s father said of his humble beginnings:

His sister Kajol Sargar is also a weightlifter and won a gold medal in the women’s 40 kg category at the Kailo Youth Games in India (2022). As of 2022, she is a science student of Smt. Kasturbai Walchand College is located in Sangli, Maharashtra.

Facts/Trivia
- Regarding Sanket’s victory in CWG 2022, his father said that he will display his medal at the tea stall. He said,
I try to provide the best facilities for my children to grow and succeed. We kept the medals won by Kajol in our teahouse. Now, a place is reserved for Sanct’s medal. “
- Sanket first dreamed of winning a Commonwealth Games medal in 2018, while managing a tea stall while watching Indian weightlifter Gururaja Poojary perform at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games on TV; she won a silver medal at the Games.
- When the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted Sanket’s training, Mayur sent him a barbell and squat set to train at home. At home, Sanket was training on the ground floor when he injured his back. Shocked by a back injury and the loss of his family’s business due to the lockdown, Sanket entertained the idea of quitting the sport. He said in an interview,
During that time (lockdown) I considered quitting the sport. My father’s tea stall had almost no business, and practicing at home hurt my back. But my dad kept motivating me by playing old newspaper clips of my award-winning performances. “

- In his third clean and jerk attempt at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Sanket failed to lift 139kg and injured his right hand.
- In an interview after the 2022 CWG, he expressed his desire to compete in the 61kg category at the 2024 Olympics, saying:
If I want to compete in the 2024 Olympics, I must increase my weight to 61 kg. It will be a big leap and it will take me two years to be fully prepared, but I am determined to make it happen. “
