Saoirse Ronan Says Her New Film The Outrun Changed Her Relationship with Alcohol: 'I'm More Conscious of My Intake'

Saoirse Ronan gets candid about her latest role.

In an interview with The Times published on Sunday, September 15 Foe star spoke about how The Outrun affected her relationship with alcohol.

Ronan, 30, plays Rona in the The Outrun, an adaptation of Amy Liptrot’s 2016 memoir of the same name about the author’s recovery from alcoholism. After acting in The OutrunRonan said she changed her drinking habits.

“I’m more aware of my intake – and there are more people of my generation choosing not to drink anymore because of how they feel,” Little Women said the actress.

Speaking with The Timesstar said alcoholism “is a world I know very well and I’ve suffered the pain it’s caused.”

Ronan added that she has seen “people I love change because of addiction.”

“There’s a helplessness you feel when you watch someone you love — friends my age and especially one I’m close to — go through that,” she continued. “What will be etched in my brain forever is that switch, when the frosting goes over someone’s eyes and they’re gone.”

“If you’ve become second best to alcohol, you become bitter, so for this role I had to put my feelings about that aside,” she explained. “And I shouldn’t have been angry about it anymore.”

Alcoholism was a topic she “wanted to explore at some point” in her life to better understand and heal: “I don’t think I would have been confident enough as a person to accept something like that even a few years ago.”

Growing up in the Irish countryside of Co Carlow, Ronan said kids would drink vodka or cider in a field “because they were bored”.

Directed by Nora Fingscheidt, The Outrun also starring Stephen Dillane, Saskia Reeves and Paapa Essiedu. According to The OutrunUser Synopsis: “After living on the edge in London, Rona tries to come to terms with her troubled past. She returns to the wild beauty of Scotland’s Orkney Islands—where she grew up—in hopes of healing.”

The Outrun arrives in theaters on October 4.
