Sarah Langs Latest News

The best sport is and has always been baseball. Nobody does that better than Sarah Langs in terms of comprehension or communication.

Langs, a television legend and the intrepid statistician for baseball revealed last autumn that she has ALS and will likely die in 2021. The MLB community has made every effort to let Langs know how much her dedication and meticulous, amazing efforts are valued in the wake of the news.

Lou Gehrig Day is this weekend, marking the beginning of MLB’s commitment to the cause as ALS Awareness Month comes to a close. Langs has taken the initiative to lead the fight, giving her fist bumps for the cause all throughout the game (and the wider sporting world and fandom community).

Sadly, there is still no treatment for this degenerative condition. However, it hasn’t taken Langs’ joy away, and the baseball world is still battling for her and countless others.

Despite being a lifelong Mets supporter, Langs was overcome with Yankees-related emotion this week when a group of influential people — Gerrit Cole, Aaron Boone, Brian Cashman, Julia Steinbrenner, Omar Minaya, Buster Olney, and PR whiz Jason Zillo — greeted her on a Zoom call and informed her that she would be their Hope Week honoree on July 4, the anniversary of Gehrig’s famous speech.

Langs nevertheless took the time to inform Gerrit Cole that she fought for him this offseason despite obviously soaking up the love and gratitude. She pushed Cole’s name back into the conversation when the other MLB Network employees refused to place Cole among their Top 10 pitchers. And for that reason, we adore Sarah. Whatever the feelings that are being experienced at the time, there is always baseball remaining to talk about.

Langs and Gehrig have always maintained a peculiar bond, long before her diagnosis, as noted by coworker and best friend Mandy Bell in her beautiful tribute for MLB.com. May 2 also happens to be Langs’ birthday and the day Gehrig first declined to join the lineup, ending his Iron Man streak. A portion of Gehrig’s speech was placed next to Langs’ desk when she first began working at ESPN; out of pure curiosity, she once took a snapshot of it.
