Rekha Gupta is an Indian politician who was nominated by the Bharatiya Janata Party as the mayoral candidate of New Delhi in December 2022, but lost to AAP’s Shelly Oberoi ).

Rekha Gupta was born on Friday, July 19, 1974 in Jhurana, Haryana (48 years old; as of 2022). Her zodiac sign is Cancer. She studied till class 10 at Manender Shakti Vidyalaya School in Keshavpuram and later joined Government Girls High School in Ashok Vihar. She received her bachelor’s degree in commerce from Daulat Ram College, Delhi, her bachelor’s degree in law from Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut, and her master’s degree in arts and MBA from Delhi University. According to her, she was indeed a bright student in school and college and was good in extracurricular activities. Rekha began her political career while in college. In 1992, during her graduation, she joined the student organization Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). In 1994, she became secretary of Daulatram College, Delhi. In 1995, she served as secretary of Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU). In 1996, she became president of DUSU.

In 2003, she was elected secretary of the Delhi BJP Yuva Morcha. In 2004, she became the national secretary of the BJP Yuva Morcha. In 2007, she was elected as Uttari Pitampura (Ward 54) MP and became the chairperson of MCD Women Welfare and Child Development Committee. In 2009, she became the general secretary of Delhi Mahila Morcha. In 2010, she was elected as the national executive member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. In 2012, she contested the Delhi Municipal Corporation elections from Pitampura North constituency. In 2022, she was nominated as the Delhi mayoral candidate of the BJP after the 2022 Delhi Municipal Corporation elections and won the seat from Shalimar Bagh-B constituency in Ward 56. In an interview, she discussed her nomination and said:
I appeal to all MPs who voted for the development and improvement of Delhi. I hope they listen to their conscience and choose the right mayor for this city. “

Rekha started her handicraft business in 2000 in Pitampura. The name of her business is “Aakriti Handicraft and Events”. In an interview, she said that she started her own business to provide employment opportunities for young and talented girls. Her business offers handicrafts, holiday/seasonal decorations, corporate keepsakes and event/theme management.

Facts/Trivia
- While in college, while she was part of a student organization, she came up with the idea of a universal admission form that would benefit many students. In college, she formed various committees to stop sexual harassment and teasing of girls. She brought the university’s lack of student buses into the spotlight.
- As a councilor, she set up a swimming pool, gym, library and community hall in CU Block market in Pitampura. She solved the parking problem in Pitampura by coming up with the idea of an integrated underground parking facility. She worked to establish a park in every neighborhood in the area, named after a character from the Ramayana. In order to listen to the problems of slum dwellers, she set up an administrative office for MPs in Hydepur. She worked on other issues including installation of street lights in Hyderpur district, regular pension payments to the poor, elderly and widows, maintenance of roads, helpline for sexual harassment of women and mobile garbage trucks in Pitampura district.
- When she became the chairperson of the MCD Women Welfare and Child Development Committee, she started the ‘sumedha yojna’ project to provide funds for higher education to girls from poor families. She also proposed a plan to provide pensions for divorced women. She also conducted character development courses for women elected to parliament. Sushma Swaraj and Smt. Krishna Tirath delivers a speech. She often gives awards to the outstanding children of MCD schools in Delhi. In Delhi, she conducted free health check-up camps for children and women. She launched various campaigns to raise awareness about abortion and child labour.
- She is an active social worker and founded an NGO, Association for Active Societies (AAS Foundation). NGOs usually appoint housewives to work in the organization. She started the Chalo Sudama Dwar program where people from wealthy families donate money and the donations are given to the needy. She is the Women Trustee and Women Coordinator of Maharaja Agrasen International Kidney Hospital, providing affordable and free treatment to the needy. She got many girls from poor families married under the scheme launched by PU-Ramlila Board Pitampura. She also started a movement against cow killing (Go –hatya).
