Thirty years after release Fumbling towards ecstasySarah McLachlan is eager to celebrate her music again with a live audience.
In light of the exciting announcement, the “Angel” singer opened up about what inspired her to return for The Fumbling Towards Ecstasy 30th Anniversary Tour, revealed her tour highlights and reflected on the 30 years since she released her hit album .
Someone said to me, ‘Hey, do you know it’s been almost 30 years since then Fumbling towards ecstasy?’ And of course I had no idea because I live under a rock. And that was really it — it was like, ‘Wow, I have to do something,'” McLachlan, 55, tells PEOPLE.
She adds: “I haven’t toured since 2016. So I thought it was a really important album for me, and I just thought it would be really fun to come up there and play the whole thing.”
The Fumbling Towards Ecstasy 30th Anniversary Tour, featuring special guests Allison Russell and Feist, will kick off May 25 in Seattle, with stops in major cities such as Salt Lake City, Kansas City, Chicago, Toronto, Boston and Nashville before concluding on July 6 in Sugar Land, Texas.

McLachlan does plan to play the album from start to finish – but is still deciding whether to stay true to the originals or “mess around with them a bit”.
Fumbling towards ecstasy was first released on October 22, 1993 via Le Studio. It topped the charts in Canada and was certified platinum within weeks, selling over 3 million copies worldwide to date. $1 per ticket will be donated to the non-profit Sarah McLachlan School of Music, which provides free instruction to children and youth who face barriers to accessing music.
Looking back on the 30 years since, McLachlan jokes that her biggest change is that she has “aged”.

“Well, I didn’t really have kids at the time. I have two kids, well, they’re almost grown. I have an almost 22-year-old and an almost 17-year-old. That was probably the most monumental change in my life,” she says of her daughters, Taja Summer and India Ann, who she says will be present at her fashion shows.
She continues, “And I think one of the things about this record was that it was the easiest record I’ve ever written. I was free for the first time in my adult life and I felt unencumbered and free to be very selfish. And so I got just spending all my time working on the board and feeling free to do it.”
After Fumbling towards ecstasythe singer-songwriter released albums such as Pretending, Mirrorball, Afterglow, Winter song, Laws of illusion, Shine bright and Wonderland. Looking back on his decades-long career, McLachlan says he’s still pinching himself.

“I’m grateful for the fact that I can still do this after 30 years. Extremely grateful. Honestly, I’m still pinching myself that this is something I absolutely love to do. People are paying me to do it,” she says. “I still can’t believe it some days. It’s like I can make an incredible living doing this thing that I absolutely love. So I just consider myself incredibly lucky because of that.”
While on tour, the “When She Loved Me” singer says her essentials include “some good books” and “accessibility to nature.”
“That’s one thing I’m going to really miss is going into the woods, so I’ll have to do some research before I go so I can find some good places to hike. I’m thinking about taking my dogs with me,” she says. “I’ll probably make a whole s—load of my granola before I go.”
