John Amos puts family first.
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Good times The alum, 83, and his director son KC Amos have addressed their relationship with Shannon Amos, months after the actor accused her of “elder abuse.”
“That’s his brother, that’s my daughter, my first child. I love her. KC loves his sister. We just have, I guess, what could best be described in the tabloids, a rough relationship, but everything heals with time, and love is still there,” John, who acted Good times patriarch James Evans, tells PEOPLE.

John Amos says he’s ‘fine’ as he accuses daughter of elder abuse (Exclusive)
The Roots the actor explains that he believes “all families go through some kind of trials and tribulations” and tells PEOPLE that he hopes their family will have a “harmonious relationship at some point.”
“It’s a bit harsh at the moment, but it doesn’t matter what you may read or hear in the paper or on this media or that media platform. Suffice it to say that we are still a family and we love each other, and that’s the bottom line,” he says.
Concerns for John’s health emerged in June after his daughter wrote a post on Instagram saying she had received a “disturbing call” from her father and claimed he was a “victim of elder abuse and financial exploitation”.
Shannon then filed a complaint with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and started a GoFundMe campaign seeking “legal, medical, future housing and care expenses” for him. John denied the claims and told PEOPLE in an exclusive statement that he is “fine.”

John Amos says he’s ‘not in intensive care, nor have I ever fought for my life’ (Exclusive)
“To all my fans, I want you to know that I am fine. I am not in intensive care, nor have I ever fought for my life. First, I want the GoFundMe campaign about me to stop immediately, and then the funds returned to those who donated,” it read. in the press release.
In a video posted by KC on Instagram, John echoed the same sentiments and stated that Shannon, not KC, “used” him.
“She would be the prime suspect — if you will. I don’t know if that’s the right term to use or not. But she’s the one I would attribute my elder abuse to. It’s definitely a case of elder abuse,” he said by phone. from a hospital bed.
A rep for Shannon told PEOPLE at the time that she was “disheartened by the continued false and defamatory statements made against her.”
John will continue to talk about his life in an upcoming documentary series titled American Dad. While no release date has been set, he tells PEOPLE that he hopes viewers “find it informative, truthful and something they can relate to.”
“We invite him American Dad because so many young men have come up to me and said, ‘Your father was my father,'” KC tells PEOPLE. “I mean, people from all walks of life. I mean, even guys [who] looks like bikers with ZZ Top beards came up to me and said, ‘Can I hug you?’ Your father was my father, man.’ And they just want a chance to shake his hand.”

Speaking about his career, he tells PEOPLE that one of his biggest influences was Norman Lear, who died at age 101 on Dec. 5. Lear developed Good times and other notable TV sitcoms All in the family, Maude and The Jeffersons in the ’70s.
“I know I was in the hands of probably the most innovative and important person to ever grace television or any studio production facility. He was one of life’s masters, an innovator, and he had incredible character,” he tells PEOPLE.
