Sarah Rafferty Shares the Suits Cast’s Group Chat Reaction to the Show’s Resurgence: ‘Wait, What?!’ (Exclusive)

The cast Suits didn’t expect their show to top the streaming platform four years after the finale.

Sarah Rafferty puts it simply: “I’m blown away,” she tells PEOPLE about the outpouring of love for the legal drama, which racked up 3 billion minutes watched in the first week it hit Netflix in June.

“You can’t really metabolize it in a real-world way,” says Rafferty, 51. “I don’t get it.”

It’s a sentiment shared by her cast members, as she reveals the cast’s group chat response: “Someone sent one of the articles that said ‘billion minutes’ and everyone was like, ‘Wait, what?!’ ”

Rafferty played high-powered lawyer Donna in the USA Network series, alongside Patrick J. Adams, Gabriel Macht and Meghan Markle, and says it’s “amazing” that the story still resonates with people “10 years later.”

“I’m incredibly grateful, because sometimes right now our world feels like it’s getting darker and more fractured and limited in moments, and I think that helps—it makes me feel good,” she shares.

“It’s just simple — to know that this thing that we’ve been working on for 10 years gives people an escape or a connection, a meaning, in any way, shape or form. And if it’s just a break from the news of the world, I’ll take it.”

Rafferty notes that “the multigenerational part Suits is kind of amazing,” while reflecting on the fact that “a generation of kids who were eight years old when the thing came out” are now falling in love with the story.

Recalling one of the first memories she has of being recognized from the show – which aired from 2011 to 2019 – she says her mother rolled down her car window in Toronto and thanked her because the show had helped her “connect” with her son, and they started watching it with his grandmother as well.

She started getting that kind of “feedback” a decade ago and continues to do so more than 12 years after the series premiere. Those bonding moments like that still make her emotional.

“I’m love, but I kind of have a lump in my throat that I’m a part of something, that little part of something that makes it for the family.”

In the months after that Suits added to Netflix, several of Rafferty’s cast members also shared their shock at the love the show is getting.

Macht, who played leading man Harvey Specter, wrote on Instagram in July, “I am humbled that the stories we created and produced for 9 seasons have been watched and re-watched and will continue to create memories for all who enjoy the fruits of our labor.”

Everything Meghan Markle Said About ‘Suits’: From First Audition to Coming Out in 2018

In November, Markle — who played Rachel Zane on the show for seven seasons, ending her run in 2018 ahead of her wedding to Prince Harry — reacted to the news herself, saying the show was “great to work on.”

“Such a great cast and crew, we really had fun,” she said Diversity at the Power of Women Outlet event.

She said the streaming numbers were “wild,” but credited the show with how well it held up over time.

“It’s hard to find a show where you can watch that many episodes these days, so that might have something to do with it,” said Markle, 42. “But good shows last forever.”
