Sarah Sunny is an Indian lawyer. She was the first deaf advocate to appear before the Supreme Court of India.

Sarah Sunny Parambett (age 25; as of 2023) started her education at Cluny Convent High School in Bangalore, Karnataka, where she attended from 2002 to 2012. She then attended St. Claret College Preparatory College from 2012 to 2014, where she studied economics, accounting, business and computing. In 2017, she received her Bachelor of Commerce degree from Jyoti Nivas Autonomous College, Bengaluru. Sarah Sunny studied at St. Joseph’s Law College, Bangalore from 2017-21, where she received her LLB degree as one of the first batch of students. In 2018, Sarah interned with the Indian Red Cross Society in Bangalore for a month. In 2019, Sarah interned at Everstone Capital Advisors Pvt Ltd in Bangalore for two months. In 2020, she interned at Kochhar & Co., Bangalore for two months. In 2021, she interned at Lakshmikumaran & Sridharan, Bangalore for a month. She also interned at the Center for Legal and Policy Studies, Bangalore for three months in 2021.

Sarah Sunny’s father, Sunny, is a chartered accountant from Kottayam, Kerala. Her mother’s name is Betty. Sarah has a twin sister named Maria who works as a chartered accountant for a French audit firm. The twins have a brother named Pratik, eight years older than them, who works at an IT company in Texas.

After making inquiries at Delhi’s Access Mantra, she realized she was India’s first deaf advocate. Sarah Sunny worked as an associate attorney at “thiru&thiru” (formerly known as Thiru & Co.), a law firm in Bangalore. She worked for the company from February 2022 to August 2023. She also contributes to the Center for Legal and Policy Research (CLPR), a not-for-profit trust through which she practices constitutional and disability law. Supreme Court lawyer Colin Gonsalves, who founded the Human Rights Law Network (HRLN), made Sarah Sunny a member of the New Delhi-based non-profit organization.

On September 22, 2023, Sarah Sunny became the first deaf advocate to argue before the Supreme Court of India. Sarah Sunny participated in the proceedings before Chief Justice DY Chandrachud. Advocate of record Sanchita Ain petitioned the Chief Justice of India to allow Sarah Sunny to argue, and the Chief Justice agreed. Sarah Sunny caught up with the proceedings and defended her client with the help of translator Saurav Roy Chowdhury. Saurav signed the proceedings to her and then translated Sarah’s sign language to the court.

The case concerns the rights of persons with disabilities. The proceedings were conducted virtually and initially the moderator allowed screen time only to the interpreter Saurav Roy Chowdhury. Justice Chandrachud then ordered that Sara and Saurav be given screen time. Sarah Sonny said in an interview,
This was a dream come true experience for me. I was very keen to appear before the Supreme Court of our judiciary and I did not expect that it would be done so quickly and that too in the presence of the Honorable Chief Justice of India. This makes me more confident and courageous. I want to be a role model for other people with special abilities. ”
Achievement
- Sarah Sunny was invited to participate in Access Mantra’s Deaf Women Achievement Program. She was one of three people invited from India.
