Savannah Guthrie’s New Book, Mostly What God Does, Targeted in Online Scam

Savannah Guthrie’s new book has been the target of scammers looking to capitalize on her popularity. TODAY Show co-host’s new book, Mostly What God Does: Reflections on Seeking and Finding His Love Everywhere, sold out immediately upon release on February 20th. Soon after, scammers uploaded fake workbooks related to the title to Amazon. Guthrie, 52, said Page six that her mother had tipped her off about the fake companion books. “I couldn’t believe it. My mom sent it to me, and it says it’s a ‘workbook’, and it’s even yellow as a color [real] book,” she told the newspaper. “But I didn’t write any workbooks, so don’t buy them!”

Guthrie also took to Instagram to share screenshots of the fake sales manuals and pointed out that her name was even misspelled on one of them. “When a book hits #1 as quickly as Savannah, third-party sellers often create fake books,” said Damon Reiss, vice president and publisher of W Publishing Group, an imprint of Guthrie’s publisher Thomas Nelson, in a statement shared with PEOPLE. “We are delighted [Savannah’s] the book still sells out within hours and days.”

Essays collected in Mostly what God does touch on Guthrie’s experiences as a mother, wife and journalist and how her faith has helped her overcome various obstacles in life. The author spoke with PEOPLE about the writing process, which included describing the grief she felt after losing her father when she was 16.

“It’s hard to put into words, because it’s not a feeling of peace, but just a feeling of acceptance and trust that God knows what he’s doing and has a plan,” she said. “At that point, that plan can be shocking and devastating and shattering. My father’s death was all of that for me and my family.” She added that “God’s grace, you can somehow reconcile and understand. And through faith believe not only that God knows what he is doing, that death is not his plan, but that through faith we have hope.”

Guthrie, who also wrote best-selling picture books Princesses save the world and Princesses wear pantsshe said she had some reservations about how her latest release would be received.

“I worried a lot, but I worried about whether I would write a decent book,” she said. “I was worried about writing something honest, authentic and true that would touch people.”

“I guess the readers will tell me,” she added.
