Scarlett Johansson Praises Pamela Anderson for Going Makeup-Free at Paris Fashion Week: ‘It’s a Powerful Message’

Scarlett Johansson joins the chorus of celebrities praising Pamela Anderson for her recent no-makeup statement at Paris Fashion Week.

In a new interview, Lost in translation star, 38, said she was impressed by Anderson’s confidence and “strong” example.

“I think it’s definitely different to see someone who’s in the public eye, a woman in the public eye, go to a fashion show or a big event without makeup. It’s just very different from what we’re used to,” Johansson told PopSugar of Anderson.

“It’s a powerful message for women to see that, whether they’re following suit or whatever the effect is, in the zeitgeist. It’s powerful for women to see other women rejecting the standard norms of beauty,” the actress continued.

Johansson said remembering her own battle with acne in her teens and twenties makes Anderson’s move all the more inspiring. She recounted a painful experience while filming her 2005 film. Islandwhen her skin flaws became a topic of discussion among the team.

“Conversation on set [was] about lighting and hiding your bad skin,” she said. “A conversation between the director and the makeup artist and the cinematographer and the lighting person. I remember it being so, so humiliating.”

Anderson, 56, explained her brave decision to forgo makeup while touring Paris Fashion Week in a video for Vogue France. The Baywatch the star said that she did not come to Paris with the intention of appearing naked, but the idea suddenly dawned on her.

“I don’t know, something just came over me and I was wearing these beautiful clothes and I thought, ‘I don’t want to compete with clothes,'” she said. “I’m not trying to be the prettiest girl in the room. I feel like it’s just a freedom. It’s a release.”

Anderson went on to say that she feels “the happiest I’ve ever been in my own skin,” noting that she finally understands the wisdom her mother gave her when she was younger.

“My mom always told me, ‘At some point in your life, you won’t want to wear makeup on your skin.’ And he’s right,” she said.

“Sometimes you have to evoke beauty,” she added. “You know, if we’re all chasing youth, or chasing our idea of ​​fashion magazines and all that, we’re just going to be disappointed or maybe a little bit sad. So I feel like that’s it.”

Anderson also said she feels a certain responsibility, as an aging celebrity in the spotlight, to lead by example. “I feel like a woman and as a woman in years, and as a woman in public… and your job is to be a model for everything,” she explained. “Just all kinds of choices. So I’m just being myself, in all these great clothes running around Paris.”

Like Johansson, Jamie Lee Curtis was thrilled with Anderson’s decision to shake up beauty standards.
