Scarlett Johansson's 2 Kids: All About Rose and Cosmo

Scarlett Johansson may be Black Widow on the big screen, but she’s just a mom at home.

The The Avengers the star has two children: daughter Rose Dorothy with ex-husband Romain Dauriac and son Cosmo with husband Colin Jost.

“Fortunately [to] everyone just at home, I’m just a mom,” Johansson told PEOPLE in November 2021. However, there is one exception: “Sometimes [I’m] Black Widow when it suits my daughter, when she will get something out of it.”

Although Johansson refrains from sharing photos of her young children, she often talks about her life at home in interviews. The actress spoke candidly about the ups and downs of parenthood, even joking that raising a toddler is like “being in an emotionally abusive relationship.”

“It’s really hard,” she said during an appearance at 2023 The Skinny Confidential Him & Her Podcast. “I remember telling my daughter when she was 2, ‘This is great. I don’t know what everyone’s talking about.’ And then she turns 3 and it’s like being in an emotionally abusive relationship.”

She shared a similar playful sentiment after Cosmo turned 2 in August 2023. When asked Party tonight if she “tackled the ‘terrible twos,'” she replied, “the ‘terrible twos’ are more like tackling me, actually, physically.”

However, Johansson’s young offspring joined her on set. During the filming of Wes Anderson’s film Asteroid Citythe actress’ husband Jost and son Cosmo, who was just a baby at the time, visited her on location — and Cosmo was quite popular among her co-stars.

“I wasn’t really popular, it was just the baby,” Johansson told PEOPLE exclusively in 2023. “People were excited to see the baby, not me. They’re like, ‘Oh, it’s you. Where’s the baby?’ ”

Johansson and her then-husband Dauriac welcomed daughter Rose Dorothy on August 30, 2014, in New York. Rose was named after Johansson’s grandmother, whom the actress called “the first francophone in my family”, and after the season in which she was born, when roses bloom.

During the appearance at the 2018 The Ellen DeGeneres ShowJohansson gave some insight into her daughter’s emerging personality. “She’s a very sweet girl,” she told host Ellen DeGeneres. “She’s very, very, very girly. Like painfully girly.”

Rose seems to love spending time with her mom. “She follows me all the time, which is wonderful,” Johansson said at the 2021 appearance. The The Kelly Clarkson Show. “But there are definitely times when she’s on the other side of the bathroom door and I’m like, ‘Rose, you’ve got to give me a minute! Everyone needs their time.’ ”

Now 10 years old, Rose is starting to get to the age where she finds her parents “a little” annoying. “I do a little dance when the school bus pulls up and she doesn’t like it,” Johansson admitted to Jimmy Fallon in 2021.. – Of course, then I exaggerate even more – she joked.

Although Rose likes to tell people that her “mom is a superhero,” she has yet to see Johansson’s Marvel movies.

“She loves that I’m playing Black Widow, but she’s too scared to watch an Avengers movie,” the actress told PEOPLE in July 2024. “She’s just like, ‘It’s violent.’ I said, ‘Oh God.’ ”

Johansson and Jost welcomed their first child, son Cosmo, in August 2021. Although the couple chose to keep his birth date and place of birth a secret, they shared the happy news of his arrival on social media on August 18, 2021. “Ok ok we got baby, his name is Cosmo, we love him so much,” Jost wrote on Instagram.

A year after Cosmo’s birth, Johansson shared the special connection between her children’s nicknames. “They are both flowers,” said the actress. “Not many people make that connection. Cosmo is a really cute little flower that comes in different shades of orange and yellow.”

While Rose put her stamp on Cosmo’s unique name, the rest of the family needed more convincing. During the appearance at the 2021 Late Night with Seth MeyersJošt joked about his family’s reaction to his son’s name. “My mom, I would say, was a little surprised by that and she didn’t really understand it. I don’t know if she thought it was something like a hippie?” he said. “She would call us, after three or four days, she would say, ‘Cosmo…’ And she would say, ‘And now, is it finally?’ ”

At the age of 2, Cosmo has already become close to some of his parents’ co-stars and even visited his mom on set Asteroid City. Johansson told PEOPLE that Cosmo was like “the baby on set,” joking that the cast and crew were more excited to see her young son than the actress. “I wasn’t really popular, it was just a baby.”

In addition to spending time on set, Cosmo enjoys swimming. “He’s only 2 years old and he’s actually a pretty good swimmer, like he’s swimming almost on his own, which is kind of crazy,” Jost said of his son in April 2024. “And he’s a smart guy, such a fun kid.”
