Golfers Nick Dunlap and Scott Dunlap are not related. Nick may be seen as Scott’s son, but the seasoned golfer has no children and is not married. University of Alabama golfer Nick Dunlap made history as the first amateur to win a PGA Tour event in 33 years. Phil Mickelson was the last to do it, in 1991.
Nick ran to hug his parents, Jim and Charlene, as soon as he was announced as the winner. His parents are not golfers and never encouraged him to become one. The 20-year-old won with a record-low 72-hole score of 29-under 259. He became the youngest ever winner of the event, as well as the youngest amateur to win on the tour since 1910.

After graduation, Jim worked as a general manager at General Motors before becoming a senior process engineer at FANUC America Corporation. In 2002, he was given the opportunity to serve in the same capacity for the Mercedes-Benz team. He was with Mercedes for almost a decade before joining IICC as their technical manager for robotics. Jim returned to the automotive industry last year, taking on the role of head of paint manufacturing engineering at Ford Motor Company. Charlene posted several messages on Facebook about her son’s golfing successes. Charlene, a contented mother, posted multiple pictures of herself and her husband cheering on their child at different golf courses.
The PGA Tour website contacted Charlene and Jim during the final round of The American Express. Jim and Charlene said their child was a motivated and dedicated child from birth. Jim stated that he saw that his son had the ability to be a professional golfer when he shot a 59 to win a local tournament at the age of 12. Charlene gets upset at the end of the conversation as she talks about how hard her son has fought to get to where he is now.

He claims to have made a respectable living from it, and while it may not compare to the millions that some other players make, Dunlap believes the experience he gained was crucial. In 2014, Scott won his Championship Tour event, the Boeing Classic, beating Mark Brooks on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff. Dunlap has kept a low profile, rarely giving interviews and not being active on social media.
