Scream 7: Everything to Know About the Upcoming Movie

Latest Scream war is facing major earthquakes.

After success Scream VIwhich achieved the highest box office weekend for the entire franchise when it was released in March, the seventh film was announced in August.

Upon request fromDiversity of the potential for a sequel, producer Paul Neinstein said “We’ll keep shooting them as long as they let us,” and co-writer James Vanderbilt added, “Absolutely! It would be amazing to do this again.”

Although the seventh film is still in the works, the franchise has hit a snag as it has been announced that several cast members will not be returning for the sequel.

In November, it was announced that Melissa Barrera would no longer star in the upcoming film after she was removed from the cast over her social media posts about the Israel-Hamas war, according to reports from Diversity and The Hollywood Reporter. Diversity reported that insiders considered Barrera’s comments anti-Semitic.

“Spyglass’ position is unequivocally clear: we have zero tolerance for anti-Semitism or incitement to hatred in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, distortion of the Holocaust or anything that flagrantly crosses the line of hate speech,” Spyglass, the studio behind Scream 7said in a statement to PEOPLE.

Barrera previously played Sam Carpenter in both 2022 films Scream and Scream VIwhere her character is presented as Scream daughter of villain Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich). Her character was set to follow in the footsteps of Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott as the franchise’s new lead.

Not long after Barrera’s exit was announced, Deadline i The Hollywood Reporter reported that Jenna Ortega, who starred in the last two Scream films as Barrera’s screen sister Tara Carpenter, is no longer expected to reprise her role for Scream 7.

Deadline reported that Ortega’s departure from the film was due to her busy schedule filming the second season of the Netflix series Wednesday and wrapping on set for Beetle juice 2.

After various cast changes, the official cast list remains unclear. However, after appearing in the previous installment, Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown were expected to reprise their roles in the new film.

After her character survived in the scream 6, Courteney Cox was also rumored to return as Gale Weathers.

After Wes Craven’s death in 2015, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett directed Scream 6 and in 2022 Scream. However, when the seventh Scream announced in August, has a new director.

Christopher Landon, whose previous films include Paranormal activities: Marked (2014), Weird (2020) and Happy death day (2017), was set to direct the upcoming film, however, in December he shared the u post on X (formerly Twitter) that it is no longer involved in the project.

“I guess now is as good a time as any to announce that I’m officially out Scream 7 a few weeks ago. This will disappoint some and delight others,” Landon wrote in his post. “It was a dream job that turned into a nightmare. And my heart was breaking for everyone involved. Everyone. But it’s time to move on.”

“I have nothing more to add to the conversation except that I hope [original Scream director Wes Craven’s] legacy thrives and rises above the noise of a divided world,” said the director. “What he and [producer/screenwriter Kevin Williamson] something incredible was created and I was honored to bask in their brilliance even for the briefest moment.”

According to Deadline, the script for the film has not yet been completed, following a delay with the Writers Guild of America strike that ended in September. As such, the film’s official plot remains unclear.

When will Scream 7 be released?

With many projects still resuming filming after the SAG-AFTRA strike ends, a release date for the film has not been announced. However, it is expected that the film could be released sometime in late 2024 or early 2025.
