See Billy Zane as Marlon Brando in Uncanny Photos from New Film Waltzing with Brando

No, it’s not Marlon Brando making a new movie. It’s Billy Zane, reviving the late star in the upcoming Waltz with Brando.

Zane, 58, acts On the waterfront Oscar winner in the adaptation of Bernard Judge’s book of the same name from 2011 by director and co-writer Bill Fishman. It is currently slated to be picked up at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

On his Instagram, the actor posted production photos and behind-the-scenes views of the film, calling it “the true story of Marlon as the ‘Godfather’ of the environmental movement, leading sustainable architecture and carbon-free design on his private island of Tetiaroa in 1970!”

Waltz with Brando “is the story of a young architect from Los Angeles who quite unexpectedly finds himself living on an uninhabited atoll in the South Pacific with his client, Marlon Brando,” reads the synopsis of the book.

Brando hired Judge, an award-winning architect whose building innovations focus on environmental sustainability, to build a house on Tahiti’s 12-island Tetiaroa Atoll. He died in 2021.

“The production team was so on point,” Zane captioned another set of photos, giving a sneak peek at the film. One photo shows Zane in Brando hair and costume – looking remarkably similar to the late actor – sitting in a chair marked “Marlon Brando”.

Waltz with Brando actors Tia Carrera, Richard Dreyfuss, Jon Heder, Alaina Huffman, Rob Corddry and others. Deadline reports that the film is a reimagining of moments from Godfather and Last Tango in Paris. Zane and fellow producers Fishman and Dean Bloxom have pledged to send 5% of the film’s proceeds to those living on Tetiaroa, according to the release.

Faye Dunaway makes a rare red carpet appearance with her son at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.

Brando, Zane told the publication, “fought for civil rights, he marched with Dr. Martin Luther King. He walked in the civil rights walk; he did it for native rights. What no one knows about is what he did for the environment as an activist and the foresight he had about what he would actually do [become] climate crisis.”

The new film is “a love letter to Tahiti, to him and his passion,” he added Titanic star.

Zane is currently at the Cannes Film Festival, where he supported fellow Australian director George Miller at the film’s premiere on Wednesday, May 15 Furiosa: The Mad Max Saga. Among his future projects are films Blunt, Sunset Superman and Download.
