Selena Gomez Recalls 'Dancing Like a Mad Woman' in 'Crazy' Emilia Pérez Audition: 'I Blacked Out'

Selena Gomez is “crazy,” according to her, for her Emilia Perez audition.

At the premiere of the popular film in Los Angeles on Monday, October 21, Gomez said The Hollywood Reporter that screenwriter and director Jacques Audiard encouraged her to get big in order to earn the role of Jessa Del Monte, the cartel leader’s wife.

“I had no idea what concept he was going for,” the 32-year-old actress said of Audiard, who told her, “‘Act drunk and throw your shoes if you want to … just go crazy.’ And I said, ‘Oh? ALL RIGHT.’ ”

What Gomez performed for her audition was the character’s biggest scene: the musical number, “Bienvenida,” in which she vents her frustrations about her spouse’s new life as a trans woman (the titular Emilia Pérez, played by Spanish star Karla Sofía Gascón).
