Senior Dog Missing for 6 Years and Mistaken as Stray Gets Rescued from U.K. Roadway

An elderly dog found in the UK is finally getting a chance at a happy home.

Non-profit organization Lost Dog Recovery UK South announced in a Facebook post that a 12-year-old patterdale terrier named Rose, who had been missing from her owners for around six years, has finally been given a chance at a family.

The organization said it all started when they received a message about a small, black dog running on the road near Crawley Down, West Sussex, stopping traffic. The organization decided to investigate and prepared food for the dog, along with cameras to track its movements.

Residents in the vicinity were also asked about the dog, who told them that it was a stray dog ”that had lived locally” for “about ten years” and that it “should be left alone” because it was “in good condition, fed and cared for.”

After discussing the situation with another household that left food for the wildlife and was allegedly “responsible for her care,” the organization decided to try to help the dog. They set a trap for the dog on December 9 by preparing a hot feast of roast chicken with JR pâté and managed to catch it around 8:30 p.m.

“She was understandably shocked and scared, but very gentle, and was immediately taken to the warmth and safety of kennels,” the organization said.

After taking her to a kennel, they learned her name was Rose and that she had gone missing from her owners less than 24 hours after being adopted in March 2017. The dog went missing from Ashurst Wood, which is about six miles away where the organization found her.

However, when the organization contacted Rose’s registered owners, they were told they would not be able to take her back because they had moved out of the area and were no longer “in a position to return her.”

“After the initial shock, our absolute JOY at finding a long lost dog is tinged with sadness as there is no “happy reunion” for Rose; she never had the chance to know the love of her family,” said Lost Dog Recovery UK South.

The organization said it would take her to a rescue where she could receive “patience and rehabilitation” and “ongoing veterinary care and medication.”

In an updated post a week later, the organization announced that Rose would be cared for by Last Chance Animal Rescue in Edenbridge, United Kingdom. It was also noted that several families had also inquired about being able to take her in and offer her a “safe, warm and loving Home.”
