Gnabry was born in Stuttgart, Germany to parents Birgit Gnabry and Jean-Hermann Gnabry. He was born on July 14, 1995 in Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg. His father is from Ivory Coast, and his mother is of German origin. He was a talented sprinter since childhood, but chose football over athletics.
He also had a short loan spell at West Bromwich Albion before returning to Germany and signing for Werder Bremen in 2016. After competing for Germany at various youth levels, David made his senior debut in November 2016 against San Marino in a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier, scoring three goals in an 8–0 win.
