Shabnam Shakir

Shabnam Shakil is an Indian cricketer who plays primarily as a bowler for the U-19 Indian women’s cricket team. Shabnam, a right-handed batsman and right-arm medium pacer, was part of the Indian team that won the inaugural Women’s U-19 T20 World Cup in 2023.

Shabnam Shakil, also known as Shabnam Md Shakil, was born on Sunday, June 17, 2007 in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh (age 15; as of 2022). Her zodiac sign is Gemini. As of 2023, she is pursuing her 10th grade course at Siva Sivani School, Marripalem, Visakhapatnam. Shabnam Shakil developed an interest in cricket from a young age after watching her father, a fast-paced player, play club cricket. After noticing her passion for cricket, her father enrolled her in NAD Academy in Visakhapatnam at the age of eight. At the academy, she was trained by coach Nagaraju. Meanwhile, she also practiced cricket in the evenings at the Visakhapatnam District Cricket Association (VDCA) ground, where she received the likes of Satish Reddy and Krishna Rao (Krishna Rao) training.

Shabnam Shakil’s father, Md. Shakil, is a chief firefighter at INS Kalinga. Her mother K Eswaramma works in the Indian Navy. Shabnam has a younger sister, Shahjahan Begum, who is a fast bowler and plays cricket for the U-15 Andhra Pradesh women’s team.

Before 2021, Shabnam was playing cricket at the district level. In 2021, she made her debut for the Andhra Pradesh U-19 team. After performing well in domestic competitions, Shabnam was selected for the ZCA. She subsequently played a few games at the divisional level and her ability to bowl at a speed of 110 km/h caught the attention of the Indian selectors and she was selected for a training camp at the National Cricket Academy.

International

At NCA, Shabnam trains with 25 other girls for the quad series. In 2022, she was selected for the India U-19 team, which played a five-match T20 series against New Zealand at the MCA Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai from November 27, 2022 to December 6, 2022. Along with this, she also represented the India B women’s under-19 team in the women’s U19 T20 quadrangular series against India A, India B, Sri Lanka and West Indies. In the series, Shabnam picked up two wickets in four overs against India A. She took 18 penalties in the game. Soon, she qualified for the Women’s U-19 T20 World Cup. Shabnam played only two games in the tournament.

    My coach always says it’s all in the name. You are a fast bowler so you just need to bowl fast. From the day I started playing cricket, my only aim was to bowl as fast as possible. Gradually, I developed excellent bodyguards. When I bowl, I aim for the ribs of the batsman. “
