Shailene Woodley Has Sweet Reunion with Former TV Mom Molly Ringwald: 'The Queen Who Grew Me Up'

Shailene Woodley has reunited with her former TV mom Molly Ringwald.

The 33-year-old actress shared a sweet photo of herself smiling next to her ex The Secret Life of the American Teenager costar at the Gotham Awards at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City on Monday, December 2.

“The queen who raised me @mollyringwald,” she shared alongside the photo.

Ringwald, 56, also shared a photo of the reunion on her Instagram Story, writing, “She made my night.”

Both stars looked stunning at the event, with Ringwald wearing a shimmering black dress with cutouts and Woodley stepping out in a black striped blazer and matching shirt. She completed the look with red wine slippers.

As fans may recall, the ’80s teen icon played Woodley’s character’s mother on The Secret Life of the American Teenagerwhich was broadcast from 2008 to 2013.

Woodley revealed in October Vanity Fair“Scene Selection” that she was not familiar with Ringwald’s work before she starred in the ABC Family series.

“I didn’t know who Molly Ringwald was,” Woodley admitted. “I was 15 years old, I didn’t grow up with TV.”

“Like, all my parents’ friends were like, ‘You’re working with Molly Ringwald!’ “, she added. “And I was like, ‘What is she… I don’t understand?’ Because I’ve never seen it Breakfast Club or Sixteen candles or any of her movies.”

For Woodley, being unfamiliar with the John Hughes movies that made Ringwald a star in the ’80s as part of the Brat Pack turned out to be a good thing.

“I only met her as this, like, beautiful older sister as a mother figure for me, who was really protective of respecting, like, my authenticity as a young person and who I was and just a kid playing a kid,” she remembered.

“She protected me that way,” Woodley added. “And I’m very grateful for that because there’s a pressure for people to grow up very quickly, especially when it comes to Hollywood.”

The Big little lies star also reflected on learning about storytelling and “the kinds of messages that I want to put into the world or maybe not put into the world” while working on the series.

The secret life it was a great opportunity for me to learn those lessons at a very young age,” she explained. “It was a fun trip and a great time, and I definitely learned a lot.”
