Her paternal grandmother Nirmal Kapoor is the sister of actor Anil Kapoor’s father Sunil Kapoor. Her maternal grandfather Bhagwan Dass Sandhu was a businessman who owned a jewelry store in Delhi. Her maternal grandmother Satinder Kaur Sandhu was a homemaker.

Shanaya Kapoor did her schooling at Ecole Mondiale World School in Mumbai. She was interested in acting and dancing since her childhood and participated in various cultural events at school.
