Thames Valley Police detectives were certain they were looking for a murderer in what became known as “the lady in the lake case”. But was it a murder?
What happened to Shana has now been revealed in a new television documentary. Holy Week 1987. On the night of Good Friday, the 26-year-old disappeared. Earlier that day he had driven to his parents’ house in Gerrard Cross, Buckinghamshire, to borrow an extension cord so he could mow the lawn at his house in Stoke Poges, which was close by.
At around 6am, she was seen piling grass debris into her black Vauxhall Cavalier before driving off. However, her car was found stopped next to the A4 at Taplow, some six miles away. She was dropped because the gearbox became problematic.
It was only a short walk to the lake where her body was discovered. But could he have killed himself? dr. Benjamin Davis, a pathologist at the Home Office, was sure. A suicide occurred here.
He claimed that Shani was not sexually assaulted and that her body showed no evidence of a struggle. He added that she was aware of three such incidents in the previous six months in which women tied themselves up and died in bathtubs.
Geoffrey Budworth, a knot expert who has assisted police in previous investigations, demonstrated how Shani could be tied up during the investigation. Even so, he admitted that she would be “a bit of work.” dr. Davis, however, did not waver in her conviction.
I was the chief reporter for the Slough Observer at the time. Like Shani’s family and friends, I reported this case and found this theory wrong.
I got the impression that Dr. Davis was a very arrogant and pretentious man who relished the media attention and showed no sympathy for the victim’s family.
He claimed that Shani’s relationship was quite amateurish. With my ‘amateur’ knot tying skills, I tried to do it myself but failed. My colleagues tried the same, but to no avail. He would have to wrap his ankles first, then the ligature, then his hands to be able to perform this maneuver effectively.
But was it possible for Shani to accomplish this with her hands in her pockets? According to one explanation from her, he may have tied her knots in front of her before running his hands over her shoes to tie them at the back of her. This is difficult for most people to achieve.

When it was suggested that Shani had committed suicide, her devastated parents demanded that a video of her body being pulled from Taplow Lake be shown at the inquest, showing her bound and gagged.
Her lawyer presented testimony from Shana’s doctor and psychologist, who went through her notebooks for any indication that she might have had mental health problems. According to both, there is no evidence to suggest that Shani is suicidal.
In fairness to the investigators, they never lost sight of the fact that they were investigating a murder. According to available information, the South Buckinghamshire coroner, John Roberts, delivered an open verdict.
He said he was “not satisfied beyond a reasonable doubt” that there was sufficient evidence to support verdicts of suicide or wrongful homicide.
