Shankar Mahadevan is a popular Indian playback singer and music composer. He is a member of the famous Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy musical trio. He is famous for singing the song “Breathless”.

Shankar Mahadevan was born on Friday, March 3, 1967 in Chembur suburb of Mumbai (age 52 years 2019). He studied at Our Lady of Perpetual Succor High School and Swami Vivekananda High School, Chembur. He received his postgraduate degree in Computer Science and Software Engineering from Ramrao Adik Institute of Technology, Navi Mumbai in 1988. By the age of 5, Shankar had become an accomplished organist and started playing the veena. He learned Hindustani classical music from Pandit Shrinivas Khale.
He also received guidance in Carnatic classical music from TR Balamani.

Before getting involved in the music industry, Shankar worked as a software programmer at Oracle Corporation. Shankar started his music career by singing songs for commercials. Shankar Mahadevan made his acting debut in the 1994 film Humse Hai Muqabala (Hindi version of the Tamil film – Kadhalan), in which he sang two songs, “Petta Rap” and “Urvasi Urvasi”.
He made his Bollywood debut with the song “Tum Nahi Jaana” from the film Duplicate (1998). He has sung many hit songs like “Chamma Chamma”, “Bhumbro Bhumbro”, “Ghanan Ghanan”, “Maahi Ve”, “Kajra Re”, “Mitwa”, “Sau Aaso” and many more. In 1998, he released his first album “Breathless”, which made Shankar famous in one fell swoop. The songs in the album were composed by Javed Akhtar.
He made his Tamil debut with the song “Netru No No” from the film “VIP (1997)”.

When contestants get worried, judges call the behavior “prankish.” However, gender activist Kirthi Ajay Kumar did not like the prank and she criticized the judge for it.

- Shankar co-founded Shankar Mahadevan Academy on March 3, 2011, along with Sridhar Ranganathan. The institute provides Indian music training through online courses and is affiliated with Berklee College of Music.
- Mahadevan came into limelight after releasing his first album, Breathless. What’s unique about this album is that one of the songs, called “Breathless,” was designed to be sung in one breath. Therefore, the album’s title remains behind it.

- Shankar has been a fan of the band ‘Shakti’ since his childhood. He used to buy their tapes and decode all the complex rhythmic patterns and phrases in their music. Years later, John McLaughlin and Zakir Hussain formed another band with the same concept called Remember Shakti, Shankar Mahadevan also joined them. When talking about this, he said –

- Shankar Mahadevan, Ehsaan Noorani and Loy Mendonsa form the pop music trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. In the early days of Shankar’s singing career, Ehsaan and Loy were already well-known composers in the advertising field. Shankar often worked with the then duo of Ehsaan and Loy for commercials. Ehsaan and Loy often asked Shankar for advice when composing music. In 1997, the three had the opportunity to collaborate on a song in Mukul S. Anand’s film Dus.
