Shannen Doherty Says She Cried ‘Every Single Night’ Filming ‘Charmed’ Season 2 amid Rivalry with Alyssa Milano

When Shannen Doherty looks back on her time filming the majority spellbound, it’s with ambivalence, thanks in no small part to the rivalry she experienced with costar Alyssa Milano.

During this week’s episode of her podcast Let’s be clear with Shannen Doherty, Doherty, 52, spoke of the “competitiveness” she felt with Milan – a “lack of female support” – which she says affected their friendship with actress Holly Marie Combs.

During the WB series’ first season, Combs, now 50, was diagnosed with a growing “baseball-sized” uterine tumor that forced the show to shut down filming for two weeks while she underwent surgery.

When Doherty tried to visit Combs in the hospital after the surgery, she says she was met with resistance.

“I waited 24 hours after your surgery to leave, and then it wasn’t even easy for me to get in. It was like Alyssa and her mom told me I couldn’t get in,” she recalls. “They blocked people from seeing you, and at the time you didn’t know.”

The actress continued to explain her frustration after Combs approached her and asked if she was planning to come.

“I remembered that you texted me and you said, ‘Dude, do you want to come see me?’ And I can feel your pain of feeling abandoned.” she continued. “But I also felt my anger at the situation that I wasn’t allowed to come and see, and how some family swooped in and caused some weird division between the two of us that then continued through season two where I think I cried every night of season two .”

Doherty left Enchanted three seasons in the series’ eight-year duration. After she left the show, she opened up Party tonight about the reasons for her departure, which she attributed to the “drama” on the set.

“There was too much drama on the set and too little passion for work,” she said at the time. – You know, I’m 30 years old and I don’t have time for drama in my life anymore.

Milano, 50, spoke with Entertainment Weekly following Doherty’s exit, saying: “I think it’s difficult when you put two very different people together. I’m very relaxed and passive. I have my Buddha. I come here and I meditate. [Shannen’s] she has a lot of energy, she’s very headstrong, she wants to get the job done.”

In 2015, Doherty once again addressed rumors of on-set tension in an interview, saying that “we were all friends and sometimes we weren’t.”

“Were there hard times?” she said, according to Hey!. “Yes, when you work so closely together, there are always going to be difficult moments.”

While Milano said in 2021 that she and Doherty were cordial up until then, with Milano DMing the actress “every few months,” Doherty suggested during this week’s episode that, on her part at least, the two might not be on the mend anytime soon.

“I heard that she converted [the competitiveness] in her book,” Doherty said, referring to Milan’s 2021 book of personal essays. Forgive, don’t forgive. “Obviously, I will never read her book, because it is Forgive, don’t forgive. So right there. You know, that tells me you’re not sorry.”
