Zooey Deschanel and Ex-Husband Jacob Pechenik Talk Running Lettuce Grow During Their Divorce

Zooey Deschanel and Jacob Pechenik managed to maintain their company years after their divorce.

The business partners in Lettuce Grow, which sells vertical stands, parted ways in 2019 and started the company the same year. They opened up about the unique situation in a new interview for Magazine Inc.

Deschanel and Pechenik were married for almost four years and have two children: daughter Elsie Otter (7) and son Charlie Wolf (5).

“Zooey has done a lot of work in terms of getting people excited,” Pechenik, 51, said. Inch Deschanel’s work for their company.

“I was a little worried [employees would] to be scared, wondering what it means for the company and me,” he added of their divorce. “Would I be devastated?

Pechenik and Deschanel, 43, created Lettuce Grow to help consumers grow fresh vegetables at home. As Inch. notes, their self-watering and self-fertilizing towers took off when the former couple separated and then finalized their divorce in 2020, causing Pechenik to worry that Deschanel might retire.

“There was a time when I asked less of her,” Pechenik said. Part of it was because of the relationship between our ex-wife, ex-husband and children. I didn’t want to strain the relationship. In part, the business took off without having to rely on her.”

Pechenik now runs the company’s day-to-day operations, and Deschanel continues to spread the word about the company with her social media following.

“I mostly enjoy telling people about Lettuce Grow because I’m proud of the company,” Deschanel said Inch. “I think my enthusiasm is contagious because it’s genuine.”

Deschanel and Pechenik even go on family trips with Deschanel Property Brothers star fiance Jonathan Scott and children, the newspaper reported. “We just did a holiday shoot,” Pechenik said. “Our relationship is 10 out of 10.”

In October, Deschanel and Scott, 45, spoke with PEOPLE to discuss their love story, their first interview since their surprise engagement in August.

During the conversation, Deschanel explained that their “personalities are so compatible.”

“We identify as geeks, we’ll have to know,” she said. Scott also described himself as a “bonus dad” to Deschanel’s children.

“Our family is very deep-rooted and very mixed,” Deschanel added.
