Shannen Doherty Wishes She’d Been ‘Sat Down’ by 90210 Producers amid Marital Issues That Partly Led to Firing

Shannen Doherty was invited Beverly Hills, 90210 actress Jason Priestley to address her sudden departure from the hit teen series.

In her episode on Monday Let’s be clear with Shannen Doherty podcast, the actress opened up about the personal events that contributed to her behavior during that time and, ultimately, her exit from the show after Season 4.

Doherty, 52, admitted to unprofessional behavior on set in her final days 90210sharing that it had to do with marital problems she was having with then-husband Ashley Hamilton, who she claims — and who has since admitted — struggled with drug addiction.

“I was in a really terrible marriage, and in that marriage things happened that made it difficult for me to come to work,” she explained, admitting that her colleagues often kept her waiting and worked longer because she didn’t show up to work on time. “And I know it’s become a big problem for the rest of you, as it should be.”

Doherty’s character, Brenda Walsh, was written off the show in 1994 after frequent disruptions and interruptions on set. During the Season 5 premiere of the series, fans learned that Walsh was moving to England to attend acting school.

Although she took full responsibility for her actions, Doherty admitted that she wished producers had pulled her aside to have an honest conversation about her behavior.

“It wasn’t anybody’s responsibility on my part, but I kind of wish they would have sat me down and looked at me and said, ‘Look, the end result is going to be this, you’re going to get fired and none of us are willing to put up with that anymore,'” she added. I understand that you have a problem in your private life, but that also cannot be translated into work and you have to pull yourself together!”

Thanks to the network manager, Enchanted the actress noted that she should have been more honest about what was happening in her private life.

“I don’t think anyone knew that my father was very ill, and I don’t think anyone knew that my husband was a huge drug addict … and that was all-encompassing for me,” she told Priestley, 54. “I didn’t want to I didn’t even leave the house because I was afraid he would go get drugs.

Priestley admitted that he also found it difficult to see the developments that led to Doherty’s departure. The wait to appear on set and the difficult conversations he had with producers Aaron Spelling and Paul Wagner were difficult for him, but he said he wished Doherty had been more transparent about her issues.

“I could have done it with more compassion, and we only knew what we knew,” he said. “Of course, the hardest thing for me was that the series was about Brandon and Brenda, it’s about the Walsh family and How will this affect the show? and How would we find a way to move forward with the show?

He added: “So it was incredibly difficult for me and there were so many unknowns, and I wish we all had more knowledge of what was going on in your life so we could deal with your situation in a more compassionate way.”

Taking “blame” for “what happened and my eventual firing,” Doherty admitted that she “should have had more of a life together, I should have left the relationship earlier, I shouldn’t have dated.”

She continued: “I was definitely affected by the attention and suddenly I could go to a nightclub and it didn’t matter how old I was. I found it all attractive and seductive. And I fell into that trap, then you add personal issues.”

Doherty and Hamilton were married from 1993 to 1994. She married Rick Salomon in 2002, although the couple split a year later. The actress married Kurt Iswarien in October 2011 but filed for divorce in April 2023.
