At the age of 12, Shantanu made her debut in the Tamil film industry with the film Vaettiya Madichu Kattu (1998), which was written, directed and starred by her father Bhagyaraj.

His next project was working as an assistant director for his father on his sister’s debut film Parijatham (2006). In 2008, he starred in his first film Sakkarakatti, which received mixed reviews from critics, who considered him a promising actor. The Filmfare Awards awarded him the Best Male Debut Actor award. He made his Bollywood debut with Angel John (2009) opposite veteran actor Mohanlal, another film that received mixed reviews and didn’t perform particularly well.
