Sharmila Tagore is one of the iconic veteran actresses of the Indian film industry. In 2013, she was awarded the Padma Shri, the third highest civilian award of the Republic of India, for her contribution to Indian cinema.

Sharmila Tagore was born on December 8, 1944 in Hyderabad (age 79 in 2023). Her zodiac sign is Sagittarius. She spent some of her early years in Calcutta. Sharmila studied at Loreto Convent, Asansol, West Bengal, and St. John’s Parish Girls’ High School, Kolkata. Her academic performance was poor, her attendance rate was very low, and she was also considered to have had a bad influence on her classmates. At the age of 13, she received a film offer and was given the choice of making films or furthering her education. At that time, her father suggested that she pursue a career in film to achieve success.

Sharmila Tagore was born into a Brahmin family but she converted to Islam before her marriage. She was the daughter of Jitindranath Tagore and Ila Barua. She has two sisters namely Romila Sen (Chinky Tagore) and the late Oyinderila Kunda (Tinku Tagore). Sharmila is the great-granddaughter of the famous poet Rabindra Nath Tagore.
Sharmila met Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi in 1965 at a post-match party. The two dated for several years and married on December 27, 1969. Her husband is the Nawab of Pataudi and the former captain of the Indian cricket team. He died on September 22, 2011. She has a son, Saif Ali Khan, an actor, and two daughters, Saba Ali Khan and Soha Ali Khan , an actor. Sharmila is the mother-in-law of Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor.
Bollywood actor Kunal Kamu is her son-in-law. She is the grandmother of Ibrahim Ali Khan, Sara Ali Khan and Taimur Ali Khan.
Profession
Tagore started her acting career in 1959 with Satyajit Ray’s Bengali film Apur Sansar. Tagore made his Bollywood debut in 1964 with Shakti Samanta’s romance film Kashmir Ki Kali. In 1967, Tagore made a film called Paris Nights in which she wore a bikini. In 1968, she also posed in a bikini for the glossy Filmfare magazine.
She then paired up with Rajesh Khanna and had 7 commercial hits including “Aradhana”, “Safar”, “Amar Prem”, “Chhoti Bahu”, “Daag”, “Raja Rani” and “Avishkaar”. She even paired with Dharmendra and gave box-office hits like Devar (1966), Anupama (1966), Mere Hamdam Mere Dost (1968), Satyakam (1969), Yakeen” (1969), “Chupke Chupke” (1975), “Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka” (1975) and “Sunny” (1984). Tagore was one of the highest paid actresses in Bollywood during the 1970s.

Sharmila headed the Film Censor Board of India from October 2004 to March 2011. She was also selected as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. At the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, Sharmila served as a member of the jury for the International Competition.
Tagore came into limelight in 2017 when she walked the ramp for designer Rohini Gugnani at India Fashion Week.
