Sharmistha Mukherjee is an Indian Kathak dancer and choreographer turned politician. She is the daughter of Pranab Mukherjee and a member of the Indian National Congress.

Sharmistha Mukherjee was born on Saturday, October 30, 1965, in West Bengal (age 54; as of 2019). Her zodiac sign is Scorpio. She was educated at Lady Owen’s School, Derry. She graduated from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, and graduated in Sociology from Jawaharlal Nehru University.
Shamista grew up in Delhi. After seeing Pandit Durgalal perform at an event, she decided to learn Kathak from him. At the age of 12, she started training under Durgalal and later under Vidushi Uma Sharma and Rajendra Gangani.

She has been actively participating in party rallies and working with party grassroots workers. In 2015, she contested the Delhi Assembly elections from the Greater Kailash constituency and received 6102 votes, losing to Saurabh Bharadwaj (AAP; 57,589 votes) and Rakesh Gullaiya (BJP; 43,006 votes). Shamista was appointed communications director of Delhi Congress but she resigned from the post on February 14, 2019. In 2019, she was appointed by Rahul Gandhi as the communications director of Delhi Mahela Congress. Shamista has been appointed as Communications Director of Delhi Mahela Congress along with Anshul Kumar. In June 2019, he served as the national spokesperson of the Congress.

- In 2017, the Indian National Congress released a photo of Rajiv Gandhi and Pranab Mukherjee with the title “Rajiv Gandhi and Pranab Mukherjee, 1985.” This offended Sharmista and she lashed out at the Congress for not addressing her father as “Shri” when he was the president of the country. Shortly after her tweet went viral, INC deleted their tweet.
- In 2018, after Pranab Mukherjee attended an RSS event in Nagpur on June 7, rumors about her joining the BJP started doing the rounds on the internet. She was outraged by the rumors, writing on her Twitter account:

- Shamista’s grandfather, Kamada Kinkar Mukherjee, was a freedom fighter who served as a member of the West Bengal Legislative Council from 1952 to 1964. He is also a member of the All India Congress Committee (AICC).
- Sharmista has previously stated that she is not interested in politics and is more focused on her dance career. However, she joined INC in 2015.
- Due to her mother’s deteriorating health, Sharmista had to serve as temporary hostess of the presidential palace and accompany her father to many official meetings.
- Sharmista has always been outspoken about women’s issues in India and has expressed her views openly on social media platforms. She is often seen making bold statements in public, even if it means going against her father’s views. She said in an interview,
That’s how I was raised, and that’s why I have no problem expressing my differences with him on issues even in public. We were a democratic, argumentative family; & I only learned that from my dad.

- When she was studying in Class 12, she started performing with the tutor group and barely studied. Her mother always told her to study, but she had no intention of studying. A few months before the exam, her father told her that it was absolutely fine; if she didn’t want to study, she shouldn’t expect him to help her get into a good university later. This sparked her self-awareness and she started studying hard.
- Sharmistha first walked the ramp in 2013 at a charity event organized by Earth Foundation, hosted by the Turkish Embassy in Delhi.
- In 2023, Sharmistha Mukherjee authored a book titled Pranab, My Father: In Memory of a Daughter. The book narrates various incidents from her father Pranab’s diary, his shared thoughts and his interactions with several politicians. Furthermore, it also sheds light on his relationship with various politicians, including Rahul Gandhi, whom he considered politically immature.
