Shawn Mendes Postpones Self-Titled Album Release Date to November: 'We Just Need a Little Bit More Time'

Shawn Mendes is still hard at work on his next album.

On Wednesday, October 10th, the 26-year-old singer-songwriter announced that he will be pushing back his upcoming self-titled LP to November 15th after it was originally set to arrive on October 18th.

“My team and I have decided to move the album release date up to November 15th,” Mendes wrote in a statement he shared on his Instagram Stories. “We just need a little more time to bring some new inspirations and ideas to life.”

He continued: “I love you guys, thank you for being so patient. I can’t wait to see you at the next few shows.”

The statement was shared alongside a behind-the-scenes image of the singer standing in front of an orange backdrop with his guitar during a photo shoot.

Mendes also said that he will release a concert film titled For friends and family only November 14 — the night before the album’s release. “This was my first time performing an album and my first performance in 2 years,” he wrote in a separate post on Instagram Stories that also included a clip from the film. “It was really beautiful. I really wanted you all to experience it.”

In the video, the singer addresses his fans while on stage, saying, “I just felt, like, really weirdly calm for the last four hours. And I was like, ‘What’s going on?’ Oh man, this is so nice, thank you for being here.”

The film was shot at the Bearsville Theater in Woodstock, NY, according to the official synopsis. “Shawn gives audiences more than just a concert as he shares the personal stories and inspiration behind each song on the album, giving fans an intimate look at the creative journey that shaped the music,” he writes. “The in-theater events will provide an unforgettable opportunity to experience Shawn in a completely unique way ahead of its official November 15 release date.”

Mendes announced his fifth studio album on July 31 and has since released multiple singles, including “Nobody Knows,” “Why Why Why,” and “Isn’t That Enough.” According to a press release, the album marks Mendes’ “most musically intimate and lyrically honest work to date.”

At the time, Mendes detailed the album’s recording process in a candid Instagram post. “Music really can be medicine,” he wrote. “2 years ago I felt like I had no idea who I was. A year ago I couldn’t walk into the studio without going into a complete panic. So to be here now with 12 beautiful finished songs is like such a gift.”

The album comes more than two years after Mendes postponed and then canceled his 2022 world tour to prioritize his mental health.

“As you know, I’ve had to postpone shows over the past few weeks because I wasn’t fully prepared for the toll that being back on the road could take on me,” Mendes said in a statement. “I started this tour excited to finally get back to playing live after a long hiatus due to the pandemic, but the reality is that I was not at all prepared for how difficult the tour would be after this time.”

“It has become clearer that I need to take the time that I have never taken personally, to ground myself and come back stronger. Unfortunately I have to cancel the rest of the North American and UK/Europe tour dates,” he continued. “We were hoping to be able to continue with the rest of the dates after a much needed break, but right now I have to put my health first. That doesn’t mean I won’t be making new music and I can’t wait to see you on a future tour.”

Earlier this month, he reflected on the experience during an appearance on Intentionally with Jay Shetty podcast and said it was the “hardest” and “biggest” decision he’s ever made.

“I had nowhere to go when things got tough, you know? I didn’t have other aspects of life that I felt connected to, that I could lean on to take a little break from touring, come back and just find that balance,” he explained. “And I knew there was only one way to do it. And that was like creating life.”

For friends and family only tickets go on sale October 24th at 7am PT / 10am ET at FriendsandFamilyFilm.com.
