Shay Mitchell Reveals Why She Doesn't Want to Get Married to Matte Babel: 'We're Partners in Life'

There are no wedding bells in Shay Mitchell’s future.

The actress has been in a relationship with Matteo Babel – with whom she shares daughters Atlas (4) and Rome (1½) – since 2017, but has no plans to marry him.

“I’ve manifested a lot of things in my life and getting married was never something that was good for me,” Mitchell, 37, said on Today with Hoda and Jenna May 20.

“I think everything works so smoothly for both of us,” the BÉIS founder continued. “He’s an amazing father, a great partner, and I really see us that way. We’re great partners in life.”

Marriage, however, “is not something that is [in the cards]” of the couple, she said after Jenna Bush Hager called Babel, 43, Mitchell’s “husband,” and she corrected her, calling him “my partner.”

The Sweet little liars alum said she’s known Babel “since I was 19,” because “they’re both from Toronto.”

“So it’s kind of crazy,” she added. “And then we reunited years later.”

Mitchell has previously been open about her and Babel’s decision not to marry, saying Hey! News 2021. that she is “not in a hurry to get married”. The A doll’s face the actress also said she doesn’t “really know if it’s in the cards for us.”

“There’s no pressure here. I love it. I love the fact that we come home and every day I’m like, ‘I choose you and you choose me.’ It keeps us on our toes,” she explained. “I say, ‘Hey, I can leave. I don’t need to go through a lawyer, I can just walk.’ And it’s the same with him, I think we both like him.”

The couple keeps their relationship mostly private and off social media, but Babel occasionally shares photos and pays tribute to his longtime girlfriend on his Instagram, particularly praising her dedication to their daughters.

In a Mother’s Day post last year, Babel shared photos of Mitchell with their daughters Atlas and Romeo, writing, “Forever in awe, in awe and love, we thank you.”
