Shay Mitchell's Kids: All About Atlas and Rome

Shay Mitchell is the proud mother of two children – daughters Atlas and Roma – with her longtime partner Matteo Babel.

After she experienced a spontaneous abortion in 2018 Sweet little liars the alum welcomed Atlas in October 2019 and completed the family with the birth of Roma in May 2022.

Speaking to PEOPLE about her daughters’ “special relationship,” Mitchell explained that “their personalities couldn’t be further apart.” Still, the BÉIS designer hopes they always lean on each other, especially when she’s working.

Although sometimes it can be difficult to be away from your children – as it was on the set of her show Max Travel Thirst with Shay Mitchell — she thinks it will help them learn to be more independent young women.

“I like to think that they would be proud to know that I’m out there working and doing things that make me happy,” she said. “I’d like that for them when they’re older.”

Plus, it makes their reunion that much more special. “I like to travel, but I also like to come home. That feeling of walking through your door and sleeping in your own bed—is there a better feeling?” she added. “A lot of times I travel alone for work, so the first thing I do is find my girlfriends.”

The founder of Onda revealed that she was pregnant in June 2019, with a post on Instagram and a video on YouTube.

“It’s kind of surreal to process the fact that another human is growing inside you,” she wrote in the caption. “It’s exciting, nerve-wracking, difficult and emotional all at the same time… We’re beyond excited and looking forward to starting a family.”

On October 20, 2019, she and Babel welcomed their first child together, daughter Atlas, after 33 hours of labor. “Never lets go,” Mitchell captioned a photo of herself holding her baby’s hand.

The couple got the idea for the name from a friend, but kept it a secret. “A close friend of ours was naming names … she said Atlas and I looked at Matteo and he looked at me and I said, ‘Oh my God,'” she told Vogue.

With a name like Atlas, it’s no surprise that she was born with a love for travel. “My goal is to fill out her passport within the first year,” Mitchell told PEOPLE in February 2020. “She’s been to Vancouver, we’ve been to Paris, Vegas… and I’m from Toronto so we’ll be going there soon.”

She added that her daughter “loves the plane almost more than I do.”

The Your the star immediately liked being a mom, and shared that she enjoyed watching Atlas change every day.

“It’s been great. There are so many new little milestones that make every day a little more exciting,” she said. “It was really wonderful to be able to spend so much time with her.”

As she grew older, Atlas began to have more in common with her mom, including taking selfies. Mitchell even posted a photo taken by her daughter and jokingly wrote, “Some people have ig husbands/wives and I have my 4 year olds.”

In 2023, Atlas helped his mom launch a children’s luggage line for his mom’s company, BÉIS.

“My kids were the inspiration and I kind of looked around and had to buy her lunch boxes and school backpacks, and I saw things that I didn’t see in the market,” Mitchell told PEOPLE. “We did [the line] very fun because I know from my own experience that Atlas likes colors and wants things to be bright.”

The A doll’s face star and Babel announced they are expecting their second child with an emotional Instagram post following the death of her grandmother.

“Saying goodbye to a loved one while simultaneously experiencing the joy of welcoming another into this world is the great cycle of life,” she wrote alongside photos from the maternity ward. “This is proof that love, life and loss can exist deeply in every moment.” same time. Grandma, I miss you every day. Baby, we are so excited to meet you.”

Rome was born on May 22, 2023, and Mitchell confirmed the news to PEOPLE two weeks later.

“I feel really, really good. It definitely takes a village. I’m really lucky that my parents are in town and they’ve all really helped me,” she said.

The actress added that the name she chose was “very special… I think it’s similar to Atlas, when I heard it, I knew it was the perfect name.”

Shortly after, Mitchell explained that Roma’s nickname was inspired by her late grandmother, Romaine. “We are so happy you are here Rome, named after my best friend, my soulmate, my ‘person,'” she wrote on Instagram.

Atlas immediately liked being an older sister. “She’s so excited. She’s been amazing,” Mitchell told PEOPLE. “She helps me change nappies and that’s good – she loves it.”

As for the second child in the family, Velma the voice actress revealed that it was an adjustment for her.

“People have told me that going from zero to one is nothing compared to going from one to two, and that couldn’t be truer,” she said. “Now I look back and ask myself, how hard did it seem to me to have one child?”

In honor of Romeo’s first birthday in 2022, Mitchell organized a photo shoot of their family photos around her and Atlas. “The perfect soul to fill your absence 💜 thank you grandma,” she captioned the post on Instagram.
